My Carb has an ESA signal tube. Will that work with the vacuum advance? |

Quote: Thanks. It helps a lot. Ive just got to get this thing better gas mileage (better than 13mpg) and ive got to get it to pass emissions and im sick of the lean burn.
Over the last couple years I have worked over my brother 1983 Dodge shorty van equipped with a 225 and originally equipped with lean burn to pass emissions and get 20-21 MPG on the highway.Read all about it HERE That thread gives the specs of what I did to the motor, the spark advance curve I wound up with, and other tricks I did to get a slant six powered van to get passable gas mileage. |

I would think it would be ok. If not NOS (new old stock) or good used carb can be had from members of this board. Frank PS where are you located? DUH We may have someone close who can help. Nope Frank |

No. That tube provides full manifold vacuum all the time. You need to get a vacuum guage and find a port on the carb that has no vacuum with the throttle closed, but full vacuum as soon as the throttle is opened.

Yup I figured hat out after all ready engaging my mouth. I had put DUH and Nope on the edited version. Im not sure who we have in Utah or where they are. Read Reed's post by clicking it and look at what he has done. PM Duster Idiot aka Rob and also Slant Six Dan ask them your respective questions and give them a day to respond. In the mean time use the search function and look the site over. Also of interest is the Articles section on the home page. Enjoy, Frank |

No worries Frank, we've all done that.

I just got done doing a lean burn conversion. I have an 81 W150 I took the entire ignition system from a 76 dart and replaced it and it works great. You will need wireing diagrams for yours and the other vehicle though. If you need more help just ask. |

I converted the 225 in my 84 D-100 a while back. I went to my Napa store and bought a distributor for a 73 Dodge pickup. I also bought a condensor and module for a 1980 GM 4 cylinder. I used a relay I had from another project. I also have a holley 1945 carb. I installed a manual choke and unhooked all the wires and it runs fine. |

Not so sure about that. My 1945 hooks up to my ESA via this thing (it's ported): |

Then I think someone has hooked your computer up wrong. The ESA computer is designed to run off a full manifold vacuum signal, not a ported one. Try hooking the computer up right and see if you notice a difference. |

The port the arrow points to is the venturi port.No vacuum at idle.Strong vacuum at part throttle.Varies the vacuum more than the manifold vacuum.I hooked my vacuum advance to the port shown.[HEI conversion]. |

That's the venturi vacuum port. It's supposed to go to the EGR vacuum amplifier (hockey puck looking thing), possibly via valves or switches depending on year and configuration. Not to the ESA computer and not to the distributor.

Oh sorry. Wrong photo.. The red arrow one is hooked up to the EGR amplifier. The larger one below and to the left is hooked up to the ESA. The above picture (from the posted Holley manuals) says it goes to the vac advance. My original carb has that same port, and the diagram under the hood says it goes to the ESA. |

Whatever the Holley book and your underhood sticker says, the computer needs a manifold vacuum source, not a ported vacuum source. |
