That should include driver. At one time he was going to have me drive the car because it was easier than adding weight.

Trust me, it is a stock valve size, stock port head. Mike keeps the car well within the rules.

Everybody talks all day about all the aftermarket add ons to up horsepower. Jeff goes faster with a 'stock' motor. Shouldn't we be talking about that in detail or is it a secret.

Most "class" car/engine builders, spend countless hours and money, to get 1 more horspower. They are not going to put this info out there as "general knowledge" . It is generally a "trade secret". You don't want to tell the competetion (or nhra) what you are doing to beat them, or what it takes to beat you.

"Stock" is a relative term here. Some parts have to remain untouched, but some can be "massaged". Engine building is a class car is all about attention to detail and using what the rule book gives you. Every spec is either a minimum or a maximum, and you get as close to those specs as possible while leaving enough margin to pass teardown.

I can assure you the the valve sizes are correct and the ports are untouched on Mike's head. I can also assure you the he spent a lot of time on the flowbench finding the head casting that was best. Any tool marks in the ports will get you bounced out of teardown, even if it was just to correct a casting flaw.

One major difference between a Stocker and a regular bracket car is gearing. A street car or bracket car will be geared to try and hit redline right at the MPH stripe on the track. Most stockers are geared to get the minimum 60 foot time and accelerate as fast as possible to the 1000' mark. After that they are just hanging on for dear life. Most Slant cars with a 30X9 tire would have 4.10-4.30 gears in the rear. Stockers will have a minimum of 4.88 and can run up to 5.56's.

Converters are crucial too. It is not unusual for class cars to have 2 or 3 laying around for different tracks and conditions, and half a dozen more that "didn't work".

Minimizing friction is another key. To go fast when you only have so much steam means getting rid of as much drag as possible in the motor and driveline. You will see some very high dollar transmissions in Stock just in the name of low drag.

Class guys all have a bag of tricks that they will do just for a qualifying or heads-up run. This is stuff that if left on the car will lead to certain destruction of an engine, trans, or rear. All of the tricks are legal, just bad for longevity.

No, I will not tell you what they are, and some of them I don't even know.

As Charlie stated, class racers are a different breed. Most are really great guys and will help you get your car to run under index, but they will die before they tell you how to go as fast as they do.

The only thing that is really a secret is our choice of camshaft, I'll share anything else with any one that ask's.
