Torque converter gone south?

Apparently That Pump Drive slot is a weak area on The factory converters, I think some of the aftermarket ones have a U shaped groove for the pump drive to eliminate this weak spot and the 90* bend in the steel at that point.

UPDATE: The tranny was behaving oddly for Eric on his drive home, but upon inspection today he believes the difficulty is coming from the shift linkage. His linkage is all original, and so are the plastic bushings. 37 years of use has taken its toll on those little plastic bushings, and it is time for a rebuild on the linkage. The linkage keeps falling out of the holes the bushings are suposed to keep it in and the tranny does not shift in and out of gears correctly.

However, in some good news I was able to remove the destroyed front pump seal from Eric's old transmission and retrieve the broken off portion of the torque converter. It doesn't looks like it was chewed up or shaved off at all, so I think that a new front seal, new torque converter, new filter, and new fluid will get this tranny back on the road, and I already have a "new" torque converter. 8)

Yep, works like a charm now. I put some composit washers and some rubber O rings between the brackets and its enough to hole the bushing in place. I'm still playing around with the kickdown linkage, trying to get the right shift points. Removing the accumulator spring makes for a nice 1-2 shift, but at a stop, I can feel the trans kinda "clunk" into first gear. Something I'll just have to get used to. It downshifts with no flare up between 3-2 shift like there was with the old unit..it evens drops down and stays in 1st if I roll up to a stop light and it turns green. All and all, it feels good...the real test will be the first 40 mile freeway blast to work on Monday. With a new U joint in the rear the vibration is gone!

Image AWESOME! Glad to hear it is working for you. Definitely report back after the shakedown cruise.

My brother has decided to do a full rebuild on the old tranny, so it will be fully disassembled, cleaned, and rebuilt before fidning its way into the Duster. 8)
