"Edelbrock carb floats are supposed to crush above about 5psi of boost (blow through). "

Hello all,

Not to high jack this thread.......But, we have used these Carter/Elderbrock carbs in the teens on boost and seen them used as high as the mid 20's blow-thru. The older 60's carbs had floats that would burst around 18PSI, all of the newer ones have better floats. The throttle shaft sealing is the only tough part on these. We actually had some in our turbo group back 8-9 years ago run these new Elderbrocks straight out of the box in the mid teens with no leakage even on the throttle shafts.

Back to your original post though. Starting with a PSI rating that you are wanting to run is not the way to do this, you always want a goal of HP or ET. If you search this forum and listen to the turbo guys on here you can make a lot of HP and learn a lot. Take Shaker223, turboram, and turbo66valiant (and others) they have all built these recently and have learned a lot along the way. Turboram is right as far as most bang for your buck the HX35 might be the cheapest and easiest way to get to your goals. We built the turbo for Ryan's car (turbo66valiant) specifically for that application and it has worked well for him. Shaker223 has a nice set up as well with that GN turbo. Three different turbos and approaches all making a lot of HP and great ET's on pretty low budget machines. We would say to start slow and build up to your goal, don't try to buy every neat gadget all once and try to put it all on at once, this almost never works. Sorry for rambling on this and we hope your project goes well.....Thanks,

Of course It wont be a weekend job, but im just asking after i have it set up and tuned can I still drive it around daily like I would before i installed and tuned the turbo?
As long as it's correctly tuned. A badly tuned turbo setup can be just about undrivable. When I'd bought Wayne's old hardware I had a setup that would pop, backfire, and the throttle response was on a time delay. I've driven other high boost turbo cars that drove like factory setups with double the horsepower. Tuning is a very big part of it.

BTW any 4bbl carb anyone suggests? I am thinking of Edelbrocks atm
You'll get a lot of views on what to use for fuel mixing. My own opinion is "there's no carb like no carb," but others have had better results.

After turbo setup can the stock /6 rear end handle the power?
Maybe on the stock /6 tires, but not if you can get any traction. I'm swapping in an 8 3/4" as soon as I get my larger turbo in there.

G-Pop,

Good to know on the later Edelbrock carbs. I got that float crushing info from a new Slant racer from MD 2 weeks ago who has run older Carter carbs...

Another turbo to throw in the mix which I am going to be using on my Slant is a Garrett TA34(T3/T4) 715583-5006S with an A/R .63 on the turbine side. Its a true performance turbo which uses some heavier duty components than found on conventional turbos. G-pop shop should know what I'm talking about.

This is alot of fun information.

What do you all suggest. soo many good decisions soo much to decide. Probably go Holly since Ive been knocking on their door about their 1920 series for 2 years :D

Any possible confirmed MPG rating with 4bbl /6? Soo many weird questions..LOL

You can get as good or better mileage than a two-barrel, unless you drive like I do. You should figure out a budget first, in round numbers, and then post it on here. These nice, smart people will tell you exactly how fast you can go for the dollars. Nitrous is a cheaper way to go fast, but it sounds like you might enjoy turbocharging.

I'd stay with the Holley due to its IMO to perform better than others, they may be more finicky but work it. If you decide to go with a 4 Barrel, Holley would be a idea and aside from running a Demon carb like what 66 Turbovaliant guy is using.

You dont know me and trbos, I used to put 17 PSI turbo on a plymouth neon, i'd smoke any 4 banger off the line where i lived..until the rods let loose and through the hood.

I plan on going as cheap as I can go. cheapo cummins diesel turbo and cheapo 4bbl.

Yeah I think the holley idea is best, since I have them on speed dial.

What holley model would you all suggest? I would like a reliable one, maybe 850 CFM, unless higher cfm is reccommended?

Smaller will be better for drivability. A 600/650 will be fine. A 750 can make 1500hp. Check out turbomustangs.com

I have that one sitting in my Garage, I had it on my Jeep. It's big enough to do the job.

I have the Mighty Demon 575 w/ annular boosters. My car ran as quick as 11.48 w/ only half of the Demon (under 300 cfm). If your on a strict budget, maybe stay w/ a 2bbl intake and carb. If you already have the 4bbl intake than disregard my post. If not than maybe put your money into something else like Methanol kit or intercooler. Both are much needed parts. Later.
