Yeah, it is time to install some stiffer springs in your distributor, or go with a distributor with a 9R governor. Sounds like you have a 15R which is for mileage.

I can almost guarantee that 42* total will kill the tops of the pistons if you beat it much.

I just sent a set of pistons to Mike that will prove that.

you guys think 42 is still too much, it felt good and i heard no pinging. i'm doing like street/stip. i dont race it, lots of car shows and want to get some gas mileage on longer trips. i can take some inital timing out of it

4 people have said 30 total,I agree,,,,,but if you think 42 is right, put it where you think it should be,not where 4 pretty knowledgeble slant guys say,,,,unless the marks on the pulley arent right,,,I think 28-30 is more correct,Mark

ok let me through this idea out there and see what you guys think. what if i can get my initial timing at say 16 and then my mechanical advance gets me to 28 total can i just not hook up my vacuum advance??

Thats what I do,,,,mine is daily driven 2 miles to work and back so mileage isnt really a concern.I beat it up pretty badly weekly at the track,my initial on my reworked dist is about 20,,,,29 total, set it this way cause its more a race car than a show street car, kinda barely street leagal.Guzzi Mark

The vacuum advance only comes in when the engine isn't under load. As long as you limit the initial plus the centrifugal in the distributor to about 30 crankshaft degrees you won't hurt anything. The total including vacuum can be more. Even if you don't hear audible pinging too much advance under load is hard on bearings and there is no reason to do it. If you can't make the engine run decent without adding excessive advance there are other issues that need to be addressed.

ok i unhooked my vacuum advance and i set initial timing to 16 and i had 30 total with mechanical advance. then just to check i hooked up my vacuum advance and i'm at 44 total. now if i'm going on a long road trip where i wont really be beating on the car can i hook up the vacuum advance to get better gas milage??

Yes......The guys are just saying when you race only have 30 degrees max for best power and to not do any damage. When I raced last night I had my vacuum advance hooked up but at WOT it never comes on. It comes on only when you have some vacuum showing, in my case it is dialed out to come on around 7". At WOT vacuum is zero.....so not to worry.

Like I mentioned in my earlier post I am running 10 degrees initial plus 20 degrees mechanical for 30 degrees total. Now you could reverse those numbers or any other combination as long as it equals 30 degrees. The VC-208 vacuum advance I am using adds another 22 degrees on top for 52 degrees total @2500 rpm. I get 55 degrees at 3000 rpm, so the big secondary spring stretches just a little and stops because it holds 55 degrees through 4000 rpm.

Hope this helps.... :D
