the valves that i'm running are 360 valves from mopar performance with dual valve springs.

from what others said i gathered that the stall speed should be considered at cruising speed so that it wasnt slipping. so if at cruising speed if your at part throttle it wont matter???

i do have a good size tranny cooler because i already blew up one tranny. welded all the clutches to the drums. i put v8 internals back in the tranny but i'm looking for a good core right now cuz it still slips into 3rd. i think the case has warped. i rebuilt it with complete kits 4 times in one week with my brother in law who is the local chryler transmission tech. but has never been right.
360 valves? I bet those were intresting to fit in there! I was toying around the idea of 318 valves, because I got lots of them.

to be honest i got the head already set up. i meet up with a guy who ran a slant in the 80s in circle track. he had a spare head that was worked real good. the valves where already fitted but brand new. i had the valves 3 angled and had the head resurfaced and pressure tested to be sure it was ok. paid 200 buck for it.

Sounds like a good score. Probably not 360 valves unless turned down or something.

You are doing well if you're making 200 rwhp on pump gas and it's streetable.

yeah i know but i think i'm going to go for a 3000 because thats the rpm i'm cruzing at at 60 and i do a lot of long distance car shows. so i dont want to burn the converter up, i want to make sure its not slipping while i'm cruising.
At part throttle the converter will be locked up anyway.
On a standard torque converter? Please explain.

All torque converters slip all the time. Just because a converter stalls at 3000 doesn't mean you have to be driving over 3000 RPM to "lock it up". It will only stall at that speed if the engine is making enough power to make it stall. Under normal driving and part throttle conditions you will never even know a looser converter is in the car.

Listen to Dennis. He knows what he's talking about here. I can second his statements from personal experience.

Me third! with 3.55 gears there is very little load on the powertrain during cruse, but run a big trans cooler so it doesn't overheat in stop and go traffic. :D

i already have a large trans cooler but i'm going to order a summit aluminum deep finned tranny pan when i put the converter in.

The reason I asked is because there is a very specific difference between a standard converter and a "lock-up" converter. As I am sure you know a standard converter as you have now mentioned "slips all the time", but it does not "lock-up".

Not intending offense here, just making sure I am clarified on what you stated.

Even a "lock-up" converter never truly locks up. :D

Post subject:  Dustertech, here is a cheap sumpin else you might want to ad

Dustertech,

I have a lockup in a slant 727 adn got my convertor from Midwest. I added a big cooler and a deep pan, but also added a temp gage. You might want to put a gage in the pan while you have a new pan out and off and have it off. It surprises me how cool the tranny runs with a big cooler and lots of fluid. Likewise I have found it useful at times to see how it heats up at different loads. Good info, real cheap. I wanted to know first if I was running TOO cool, for instance.
