Is Clifford really that bad? Their exhaust manifolds look pretty good to me.

If they have them in stock...otherwise they charge you and you wait until new years for them to get around to getting you something...

If I had the $1200 for a head, I'd have Mike Jeffries do the head...all his stuff seems to win money at the races and he's got the experience...plus for a couple extra $$ you can also get the windage tray and crank scraper from him too...

Like everything you have to have a system that works together... even a moderate cammed engine with all the goodies is still going to get handicapped by a economy rear end ratio...other things to budget in are you rear end and the tranny...if both are stock and you increase the power and torque they may show you they love you to by making some complaints and then breaking.

Make a list of what you expect out of your car, then we might be able to tell you what to put on your junkyard wishlist and what you need to acquire for your goals...as always there's a certain point where you don't get to have your cake and eat it also...if you insist on lots of fun and power your gas mileage will diminish a far bit, and there's a point where if you insist on a 12 second car...you will need a trailer to haul it...

Good Luck,

The Cliford headers fit well but the service is absolutly terible. I ordered my Aussie manifold and cliford headers back on Fri 22, May, 2009 the Aussie manifold arived 2 weeks later and the Cliford headers arived. 12 days ago. With excuse after excuse. They are nice headers.

The Ausie Manifolds make WAY more torque over the Off. But you do have to conver to manual brakes or build a offset spacer. With a NOS plate under my 390 holley fitting an air cleaner was a challenge. BUT I would definatly go this route again. Tunes very well and bour what a diference. Pulls HARD.

What does Mike usually charge for head work? Crank scrapers and windage trays?

Hooker headers look decent from photos but are kinda pricey. Anyone have experience with them?

Just repeating D.I.'s statement. You HAVE to have a plan or you will be spending money left and right, complaining that this p.o.s. engine sucks and you should have just swapped in a V8.

Just a little side story. I went to the local 1/8 mile track for their "test and tune" day. I filled the tank when I left the shop Friday night, drove to the track, made over 30 passes on Saturday morning, drove back home in the afternoon. 204 miles round trip (including the 30 1/8th mile passes) and it only took 10.25 gallons to refill her! I averaged 19 mpg and beat the heck out of her!!! That is why I love slants. Don't get me wrong, I have a dream build engine block on the stand but this is just too much fun driving and racing a stocker

You don't need headers. Period. They look neat but you will need one hell of an engine before they are required. And even then most have found Dutra Duals to be just as efficient.

Keep searching and reading here. Get a plan or copy someone elses proven build. That is going to be the best bang for your buck.

Do Not, I repeat, Do NOT Get the head from Clifford!!! I made the mistake, take my advise and not give them any money for anything! I had to send the head back to get it re-done, and am still waiting for it's return. POOR and incomplete workmanship, incomplete porting and machining. When anyone gives you a warning about Clifford, believe them. I bought all items from Clifford, Intake, Headers, Cam Kit, Timing Set, the works. My experience with them was not good. Anybody have anything contrary?

Your turn--- cody's duster. you will get great results -- if you will give the members a plan of attack for this car...
The group is very helpful & has vast experience.

Make a detailed list of what exactly you want the car to be-- the more exact you are expectations the better the answers will fit your needs.

Actually you might be better off buying the 67 dart race car for sale on here- just take the stickers off of it & go- it looks like a sweet deal!!

OK,
Maybe I am not clear enough. I want a slant 6 that will beat most stock
V-8s. It does not need to have perfect street manners.

I am thinking k-1 rods and Wiseco pistons to get 10.25-1 compression.
Heads ported and larger valves. Aussie intake with 390 holley. Hooker headers. Not sure on the cam yet. Windage tray. Electric fan to get rid of as much partasitic drag as reasonably possible.

3000 rpm stall converter. Transmission rebuilt by ?

Sticking with stock rear end untill convinced I need something different.

Don't mind spending some $ to get it right from the start.

Hooker headers will make the most power of an header you can put in the car. They are pricey, but they work. With a Duster you will need all the steam you can make.

Mike will build you a very good head for about the same or less than Clifford, depending on what you want. Plus, a head from Mike will do what it is supposed to. You can give him a call, he's in Lexington, NE. 308/324-3576

A 390 Holley will work just fine. My car has been low 14's on motor only with a vacuum secondary 8007. Don't be fooled by the Craftsman truck carbs, they are not really a 390 after they are done. (I have one of those too)

If you really want to surprise a lot of people, do your homework and spray the thing. A 100 shot will work wonders for you, but be careful. The hit of nitrous is very addictive and soon too much won't be enough anymore.

Not to the contrary; this is the experience most people have now unfortunately.

I'd do the head myself before giving $1200 to clifford

I am not sure I want to mess with the problems of the Dual Dutra Duals.
Problem? Mine slapped right on there. Just gotta take a Dremel and carve a little hunk off the back of the block. Takes a minute or three.

Sounds like you are pretty serious. The guys around here are very encouraging and helpful. As far as transmission, I would whole heartedly recomend Rick Allison. He is southwest of Indy. If you want a catalog, I can get one for you-let me know. Otherwise go to his website click here I can also get you references.

I want to thank everyone for the helpful info.

You guys are awesome!

I will need to contribute $ to this site soon.

I see where campbell enterprises http://www.campbellenterprises.com/slan ... istons.php
sells the k-1 rods and wiseco pistons. Is there any good reason to buy directly from k-1?

The link to the rod/piston combo has good prices as long as shipping is reasonable.
