yeahyeah
ive worked on small blocks for some time now so they are almost 2nd nature
in the past ive always opted to swap then work on a slant 6

but here is a new symptom
i tried to set my carb better and in the process tried to adjust the fuel mixture...well it started to back fire and i knew i went to far so i tuned it in more but it apparently didnt help..instead of fully backfiring i get i slight fire and it wont go away at all...
like ive said in other postys i get frustrated when i cant throw ideas around with people so not having my buddies over doesnt help
mainly my buddy who loves slant 6s

Your timing is too retarded. Try setting it at 10 degrees. That will put out the fire in the carb and put it under the tires instead.

The other thing you might check is to be sure the valve lash is set right, .010 on the intake and .020 on the exhaust. You don't want a valve hanging open or not closing all the way. That can cause it to back fire through the carb at or near zero degrees of timing.

if you keep working on the carb and the problem is still there it`s not the carb. your intitial timing with vac disconnected should be 12degs adv,try rolling the engine over by hand and check each cyl int&ex valve lash when intake stops moving, this will get you the right lash setting with the engine hot. v8 or /6 it`s the same!

At the top of this Engine section is a sticky that has all the slant carb manuals. If you can fix a small block you can fix a slant.

well my buddy came by today and we worked all day on the car
my valve adjustment wasnt too bad but doing it running is just plain dumb IMHO when doing it cold is alot more accurate
but we realized why the engine was running like crap
apparently 2 pushrods jumped out and one valve was getting stuck
well after adjusting the valves a few more times and double checking everything we got it to run pretty good but knew something else was wrong
we checked the plugs and from the valve adjustment we did while it was running we damaged most of the plugs
another reason why adjusting them running is dumb
3 plugs were beaten down to 0 gap and another had a catostrophic failure and the valve ate it up causing the valve to stick
luckily these engines are strong
we changed the oil and no more valve hanging up
also went and got new plugs from wally world(around930 so everything was closed) and the autolites we got were about 1/4 shorter than the boschs that were in there
well it runs amazing now minus the exhaust leak which is causing it to die when you apply the break but by the time we did that we called it a night
drove my buddy home in the car and drove home

also 10 degrees and 20 degrees is too tight
from 3 different books i got its supposed to be 15 and 25 for older models and 12 and 28 for newer

I'm missing something here(which isn't unusual),you wacked the plugs because of valve adjusting? I've always been a "while running"valve adjust guy on all mech engines I've ever owned(except H-D's and VW's)even used to have a set of "rocker stoppers"for doing small block Chevys.I don't believe the valves can hit the plugs unless maybe it's somekind of major "long reach" plug in which case the valves would be smacking the plugs all the time, just not seeing this happening.
I've got a slant I'm running now that had all 6 exhaust valves hung open from setting for a few years(moisture=rust=stuck)and 4 bent pushrods and nothing came close to hitting the plugs. Plus while trying to get it running the pistons didn't even hit the stuck valves so I'm confused, sorry. Now detenation can bugger up your plugs, that I can and have seen.

#1 don't use Bosch, #2 hopefully the Autolites will be OK because they are now made in China. Some people have reported defects in them.

The only thing that can bend those plugs is the piston.

The exhaust leak is causing the engine to die? Don't see how that would be.

Do you have a vacuum gauge?

Rug do tell how the piston is going to hit the plug :? Unless there's chunks of piston and such floating around in there I still don't see this happening.

Tell me how a valve is going to hit one. Only way a valve can hit one is if it gets bent by the piston.

If he has the wrong plug in there it could extend too far into the chamber.

Either that the gap was closed on initial installation.

well i think if i started with the right plugs then adjusting the valves while running would have been fine
but like i said the plugs were 1/4" longer than they needed to be
so dont get plugs from the idots at autozone
