No, it never even crossed my mind, I will do that this afternoon. The last time I changed the plugs, they were all a good brown color so its probably firing on all 6

I got around to pulling the plugs and checking the gaps and every thing, and noticed that #5 plug was coated in gas, and looked like it had never been used. #6 and #4 were perfect. Started the engine, pulled the #5 wire and it started running rough, ok... so I pulled #6 and there was no change in idle, RPM, no notice in power loss while hitting the gas. I checked if it was getting spark (my hand went numb ) so I swapped plugs with #5, and started it again. Pulled the plug off #5, ran rough, reduced RPM, etc. Ok, that plugs good... Pulled #6, no change again! All plugs look like they are running a little lean, but the exhaust smells otherwise, whats going on?

Oh I forgot to add, I reduced the Idle to 750, and it droped to 600-650 in gear at first, then dropped down to 500 (650 in park/neutral) after some driving. So I adjusted the idle in gear to 650, it has now dropped back down to 550 :?

Compression check. Maybe a blown head gasket between #s 5 and 6?

I think I might have found the solution to my poor mpg. While I was adjusting the idle (it mysteriously shot back up to 900 rpm) I happened to notice the throttle wiggle. Well, my throttle shaft is completely shot and is making it run too lean (thought the plugs looked weird ) I have 3 BBDs I can rebuild, one is a super six and the other is a 318, both have worn shafts. The other one is off a big block  and it is perfect. :? Can I use just the base or the whole carb?

Yes, you can swap base plates while your getting the original one bushed.

There are a few things that worry me, the BB one has a notch in one of the throttle plates and a small hole in the other. Also, three of the screws heads have broke off on them, but the bottoms are still there.
