Quote: If I were you I would definitely put in a new distributor. Not only is yours missing the advance mechanisms (costing you a lot of performance and economy) but it is also rusty and crusty enough to be suspect.
So what year distributor should I get ? 74 to 78 ???

That's what the man said. Quote: Eventually you should pick up a 74 to 78 distributor with a vacuum advance on it. That will help you get some better mileage
Also you should do the hei mod so you don't have to worry about any orange or silver boxes. Everyone here says they're junk, and since all you can find are made in china I believe it.

I'm not sure where Ted's seemingly arbitrary "74 to 78" recommendation comes from. That year range encompasses scads of differently-calibrated slant-6 distributors, and the '73 distributors were mostly identical to the '74s, and many of the '79s were identical to the '78s.The HEI upgrade article contains a link to Old Car Parts Northwest, who have a large stock of very good new slant-6 electronic distributors such as #3874082: |

Simple, I love the 15R governors to tune for mileage and the electronic pickups. Most have good vacuum advances too! I used to work at a Bellingham Auto Wrecking. Every one I pulled between those years have been great. |

Great, but your "'74-'78" recommendation still seems random because:1. It is not the case that all '74-'78 distributors have 15R governors, and 2. there are distributors other than '74-'78 with 15R governors, and 3. '73 distributors are identical to '74, so there's no reason to start your list at '74. |

For what it is worth, the distributor I put in my brother's 83 van came out of a 74 Valiant and worked great in stock configuration with only tweaks to the vacuum advance pod. I cleaned the springs and lubed them and the curve works very well. |

I have a lean burn 87 d150. It had the wiring harness somewhat hacked and the extra plug he's asking about was on mine too, unplugged. It worked like that for a few weeks before the lean burn computer crapped out. I just wonder why it stopped when he changed his oil. Maybe because of all the commotion on the passenger side of the engine? It should be something real simple! On the other hand mine died as a result of stopping for gas. Wouldn't restart. Happened twice before, taking longer and longer to 're-boot' or cool it's transistors or whatever. After I replaced it I had all kinds of trouble from using what seemed to be good IGN on hot wires that previously fed the computer. Two of them seemed to work fine for a while before they stopped providing power (?!) Now I have my MSD module's IGN+ hardwired to a fused switch in the cabin. Hopefully my experience with these trucks won't be yours. Like they said, the easiest is a points coil, fed by a ballast resistor (you don't have one, bolt one to the firewall) or complete new ignition (and switched power supply Good luck Kevin |
