Have you tested the circuit to see where the problem is? With the ignition on, momentairaly ground the wire at the sending unit (fuel tank sender) to see if the gage goes to full. If it does, pull the sending unit and test that. DD |

It'll be easiest if you have a helper. Turn the ignition key to the "on" position (but leave the engine stopped). Have your helper watch the fuel gauge. Go under the car and find where the fuel line and the wire connect to the sender, which is located on the front face of the fuel tank. You're looking for a round plate about 3" diameter with a pipe and a wire connected to it. It's the only item of that description in that location. The wire is pushed onto a post on the sender. Grasp it and pull it off; you may have to wiggle/twist to get it to pop free. The actual metal part of the connector is recessed inside the plastic boot at the end of the wire; stick a nail or a darning needle or somesuch into the connector so it makes contact with the metal part inside, then touch the other end of the nail to a well-grounded piece of metal -- depending on how rusty the car is, this may be hard to find, and you may have to use an extension wire from a good ground to under the car to touch the nail to. Within a second or so of touching the nail to a good ground, the fuel gauge needle will begin to move upward if it's going to move. If it moves at all, that concludes the test. If it doesn't move, further diagnosis is needed. |
