When I did this on my Valiant I burned out the rubber bushings then used my sawsall to make a cut in the the outer sleeve. Then it slid right out. My brother in law bought one of the home made style setups, thats what I used on my convertable. |

Reed, Sorry to hear that plumbingparts.com let you down. My bushings pressed out and in with little effort using a manually operated socket & ratchet. Perhaps you had too small of a washer to catch the rim of the outer casing. Now, lower control arm bushing removal will not work with my cheepo home made tool. |

No worries. The bushings were in the control arm really tight and were somewhat rusted in place. |

Hey wjajr, I built your rig using the parts list you provided, and it worked great! I did have to use the pneumatic impact to get them out, and had to bang with the mini-sledge a little bit but all in all a breeze. Thanks for this post - I'm always impressed by the clever solutions you guys come up with. Next step - I'll turn the tool inside out and press the new bushings in. One suggestion: use something as a spacer to prevent the tool from sitting cockeyed against the control arm - I bent the first bolt by not doing this. Then I used a scrap piece of 1/4" flat stock steel and it worked great. And definitely go with the strongest hardware you can get - hardened grade 8 as previously stated. -Gerard |

It you are not trying to Save the metal bushing shells for polyurethane bushings; Some Poly bushing do not come supplied with the shells Then I just use the air chisel and beat them out that way.. although burning them and beating them works too! Greg |
