4x4jimbo, Don't buy the resistor with the exposed coils. Get the fully potted version. Put a spacer/thick washer behind the support bracket to allow better cooling. Just curious.............. Do you have a voltage gauge installed under the dash yet? Sounds like the alternator is putting out too much voltage. Is the voltage regulator ok? How about your battery? I hope it isn't being cooked to death from over charging........ Is the battery old and are the cells shorting out from all the crude shorting the plates? That would cause the alternator to over work..... I am trying to understand why you would have over 12 volts coming into the resistor that would cause it to burn up. |

This advice is baseless and random. Most factory-installed (and Mopar service replacement) resistors have exposed coils, and no spacer washer, and they worked—and continue to work—just fine for many years. This is more confused advice. We have no specific or circumstantial indication that this guy's line voltage is over "12 volts" (which itself is lower than normal line voltage); that looks like a random guess on Ted's part. And high line voltage would not cause the ballast resistor to catch fire. It's difficult to imagine what would cause the ballast resistor to catch fire, since it's not made of combustible materials. If the ballast resistor is running too hot, something downstream of it (i.e., the ignition coil) is drawing too much current through it. 4x4jimbo: Thanks for the compliment on my beard! I am ordinarily reasonably jolly, but I get cranky when I see someone (Ted, in this case) sending a guy with car trouble (you, in this case) off on goose chases with random, baseless guesses phrased in authoritative terms. Also, the difficulty you're having merits its own thread in the electrics section of the board; this present thread is about carburetor issues and repair.

SL6Dan, In your upgrade recommendations, your the one that recommends the voltage gauge when upgrading the alternator and running a line directly to the battery bypassing the amp gauge. If the alternator is putting out too much voltage do to one or more of the questions I asked, the resistor will run hotter.....especially when the coil starts cooking from increasing resistance. There is a method to my questions........and they are not random! |

The only suggestion I haven't heard is checking the fuel sender sock AND USING SOME PRESSURE TO BLOW EVERYTHING BACK. regards , max |

Worked on it some today and I just have no idea. Took the fuel filter off and hit the key a few times and got a nice healthy flow of fuel. Put a new fuel filter on and nothing changed with the idle. New condenser...nothing. Carb still looks fine to me. Sooo I've resorted to having to take a couple videos with my digital camera to see if you guys can figure it out. First vid is basically of the tail pipe and the second is the motor.
