I'm just guessing here but I believe you MUST take out the one check ball in the Transgo kit. |

I'll double check the instructions. I am about 95% certain I followed them exactly, though. |

That is shifting WAY to soon. Shoot for the 1-2 shift at 20, 2-3 shift around 25-30, light throttle. Remember how we set up the Satellite? Thats about where you want it. |

OK. I dropped the van off at Casey's Transplant this morning. Hopefully I will get a diagnosis tomorrow. |

I'm picking the van up today. I haven't heard what the problem was yet. I'll post back as soon as I know. |

Well, the problem seems to be fixed. The most detail I got out of the shop owner was something about seals being nicked around a piston allowing fluid to get by. He spent most of the time i spoke with him apologizing and ranting about the fact that someone jumped the razor-wire topped fence in his "secure" storage yard, opened the locked door on my brother's van, smashed up the dash, and stole my brother's stereo. To his credit, he knocked $320 off the total bill due to the theft. However, I never really got a straight answer about what the problem was. The one complaint i still have about this tranny is that it has no kickdown at highway speeds. Above 55 MPH you can floor it but it won't downshift to 2 or 1. This could be problematic if my brother wanted to pass someone on the highway. |

Well, I fixed the problem this morning. I pulled the tranny and replaced it with an all original 1973 non-lockup out of a 73(?) Dart. I got this tranny for free from Eric W a few years back when the torque converter cracked. So hooray for original Mopar engineering and boo on Casey's trans Plant in Lakewood WA that took $600 of my money to "fix" the old tranny but didn't fix squat. My brother's van now seems to be driving fine with no shudder. It also is running smoother and quieter. It only took six transmissions to get here.... |

why were you looking for it to shift that early? that leads to "lugging" (esp with such a heavy van,, aerodynamics like a brick wall and all) and less MPG; I thought this was some sort of "maxi mileage" project. and in case you forgot, reaqr gear ratio tire size and how much you are "into" the gas pedal will make the upshifts happen at different times. also it's been a whle since I have been into a 904; but I'm not so sure that factory pressures mean anything anymore once a shift kit goes in; shift kits modify pressures in the various hyd. circuits at different times, that's how they modify shift qualities. |

The shift points I mentioned are the shift points specified by the 1983 Factory Service manual. I'm done with shift kits. At some point in the future I am going to swap an unmodified valve body into this transmission and see how it works. |
