Quote: , i may look you up for an honest fair rebuild. youre not that far from stuart. by hard parts i think you mean the pumps and planetary gears, but in reality, when you have the 904 on the table and all apart doesnt smart money say replace that stuff too while it is all apart? thanks bob f
On a "stock" rebuild the "hard" parts are inspected, and 99% of the time they are fine. On a performance build, depending on the year and model, it is sometimes necessary to replace "good" hard parts to install better ones. Stronger planetarys, larger clutch packs, different ratio levers, etc. But this is for high output situations, and does add to the cost of the build.

hi charlie- was talking to uncle moe who rebuilt powerglides, fordomatics and mostly powerflites. these were the two speed automatics from the 50s and 60s. told me that in most of these rebuilds, the 3 parts that would crap out would be, clutch packs, pumps and bands in that order unless the trans was abused by young tuffs. is the same still true with these modern 3 and 4 speed automatics? thanks bob f |

Quote: Quote: For what it is worth, a few weeks ago I was quoted $1000 to rebuild a loose 904 if I brought it in to the shop already removed. I guess it depends on where you live. I must be surrounded by crooks...
I guess so.FYI, as long as the trans doesn't require "hard parts", a master rebuild kit with bushings and thrust washers, bands, seals, clutches/steels, is less then $100. A decent trans guy can do the rebuild in 3-4 hrs. Even someone that has never done a auto trans, but has the ability to build an engine, can do the 904 in less then 8 hrs with a GOOD trans manual. The hardest part is locating or making the few special tools needed. |

Bob, I would say order of replacement would be clurches, bands, and then pump. Richard |

I would add to the list, bushings, lip seals and seal rings, way before the pump, itself.

You should really start a new thread if you're looking for an A500 adapter. DusterIdiot on here is the guy to talk to about that. I sold him all of the tooling and parts to make those adapters. Not sure if he is set up to do business yet or not. |
