they have 'em at rockauto, delayed shipping up to 2 days, so should have it within a week at latest, its 4.45 there. i did replace the grommet on my tank when i replaced the tank and sending unit last year after years of fighting gas problems due to it sitting for 9 years with gas in the tank. got it at a dealership for not too much, new sending unit from rock auto also is a good idea, mine on my 67 came undone, had it fixed and broke again, new one fixed it. |

Well shoot, I was searching on google and they said Rock Auto had it for $5. Then I went to the Rock Auto site and it said they didn't have the part #. Oh well either way it's going to take some time to run the gas out of this tank so I guess a couple weeks waiting from Summit wont hurt. I already had the tank and sender out of the car and the sender looked good. Its just the car hadn't ran for a year and a half so I wanted to make sure everything was clean. I know exactly what you mean Sam but I'm stubborn with this. I refuse to let the car get the best of me and I refuse to let a mechanic charge me $100 to install a $5 part. I'm going to battle the fire hazard, noxious fumes and scary black widow and get that thing sealed up if its the last thing I do |

The stock gasket is 1/16" thick, has a 2 1/4" id and a 2 15/16 od. Viton would be the best material to make one from. You should be using a brass tool to do the tapping with, so it does not spark. On my 65, it was just too loose to use an original gasket. Or it was supposed to be thicker and the parts listings were revised with the newer part. I ended up making a 3/32 or 1/8 gasket, I don't remember which. It should just be snug, not jammed together. Clean both surfaces with carb spray, if they are damaged or have corrosion it is not going to seal. It has already been pointed out to lube the gasket, vaseline is good for o-rings and this sort of thing. |

After a couple months on back order, I finally got the new lock ring and gasket. The new gasket was just barely thicker than the other one I bought from the dealership. I put some vaseline on it and installed it with the new lock ring. It was so loose, I was able to just turn the lock ring all the way over with my fingers and hardly any pressure. I couldn't understand why it was so loose now. I took some composite gasket material, kind of like the kind we use for our manifolds, and made one the same size as the original sending unit gasket. I put the rubber down first, the gasket I made as a spacer and then the lock ring on top of it. Tapped the lock ring around and this time it was tight. Went and put about 7 gallons in the tank and when I got home I noticed it's STILL leaking. It's only leaking about 10% as bad as it used to but thats not good enough. Does anyone have any other idea's I could try before I just say screw it and buy a new tank? This thing is beginning to turn into a mini money pit with all the wasted gas, grommets and gaskets I've been putting into it. |

I've found it very hard to reposition the gasket easily with the tank on the car; it's much easier with the tank out of the car and the sealing surface horizontal. |

I had a similar problem w/ a new sender on my 1960. I solved it by using the new rubber gasket, then installing the sender then installing a hand cut, thick, cork gasket and last but not least using the original lockring. |
