You can check the timing chain for wear by turning the crankshaft pulley. You'll feel when the slack is out of the chain. Mark the pulley using the timing index as a reference, then turn the pulley in the opposite direction until you feel the slack disappear. There should be no more than 4-6 degrees of "free play".
