Post subject: | Collecting parts for build |
Driveline Found a 1957 Plymouth 3 speed electric OD Trans- need to decide how to wire the o/d- fully auto or fully manual 350.00 Tranny is exact length, exact parking brake, exact driveshaft connection, exact crossmember mount. It will require swap/mod of shift arms. Located a welder to modify bell housing. I didn't like the threads he left me so I installed heli-coils in the bell housing. Now I'm happy. O.D. governor interfered with trans hump bracing. Cut-off wheel in a 4" grinder did the trick. Trans is in the car. Shift arm swap complete, but I need to adjust linkage. Located 10" 10 spline clutch and a new stock pressure plate 35.00 Resurfaced flywheel also need to turn a little material from the inside edge to allow clearance for BIG truck clutch 35.00 resurface 30.00 turn on lathe Brakes I changed my mind and bought a disc conversion from AAJ brakes http://www.aajbrakes.com/ 76 Dart Master cyl. and discs, 76 MonteCarlo calipers and pads 290.00 kit AAJ 250.00 locally purchased brake parts Located a proportioning valve/distribution block that will allow me to install my pressure actuated brake light switch cleanly- it also comes with the groovy slip on wiring connector pigtail. 76.00 ebay Turbo Welder fabbing a SS Turbo adapter Looking for 4 bolt IHI turbo exhaust flange IHI from 87 SVO LCD wide band Air Fuel Ratio gauge, heated sensor 200.00 Electric boost gauge LCD 79.00 A pillar gauge mount 25.00 MSD Master Boost Control 159.00 Slant six dan HEI conversion 100.00 Grudgingly looking for a tach to stick somewhere. I like having a tach, but I'm running out of real estate to put one cleanly. Exhaust Found 3" cut and weld exhaust system Autozone 88.00 fits Ford truck Discovered mandrel bent 3 and 4" oval exhaust tubing Cam Erson mild turbo grind- Custom grind for around 150.00 I LIKE IT!!! Thanks to this group pricing: http://www.slantsix.org/forum/viewtopic ... ing#128044 2 barrel cast iron manifold ebay 100.00 2 barrel Holley 500 CFM 239.00 new Advance Auto online GM carb hat 75.00 ebay Aussie Speed Gaskets 120.00 head, intake/exhaust, sandwich 66aCUDA forum member and Aussie Speed Distributor Carter GP4601HP 18 psi rotary vane fuel pump- I need to install 3/8" fuel line- maybe a bulkhead fitting in the tank immediately adjacent to existing sender, so I can get at it 125.00 Summit Fuel pressure regulator 30.00 ebay Used MR2 intercooler- wil fit between radiator and grill on driver side. Both inlet and outlet are on the driver side, 2" angled slightly upward. 35.00 ebay Probably need to relo battery for fresh air and I/C piping- we'll see Plan is to bend rigid aluminum pipe and join w/ silicone sleeves Need BOV Cooling Chevo's Radiator rebuilt my stock Radiator and heater core New cut to fit molded hoses from Rock Auto I'll see if Chevo can solder in a fitting for a turbo coolant return line I may drill and tap water pump housing for turbo cooling- we'll see Engine paint Cross referenced an old Volkswagon metallic turquoise DuPont Centari. Color VW/Audi L96Y. I think its too blue but it looks good. Paint went on nice, I scuffed it up a bit installing the engine and I need to paint road draft tube, oil breather, dipstick tube and handle, etc, so touch up is not such a big deal. I think I'll paint the carb hat the same color, too. Engine bay Robin egg blue, same as body Used Ace Rustoleum-ish product mixed from a paint sample. 13.00 |

Sounds like a great project and all that you are learning. And a nice drive train you have going. Friend here has a 60 Savoy slant six 225. HE was amazed how well it ran after a valve adjustment:) |

Post subject: | Holley 500 CFM |
Holley HLY-0-7448 350 CFM 2 bbl Change of plans- now using a 500CFM Carburetor arrived yesterday. I'm glad I talked to Joshua Skinner. I was able to order nitrophyl floats and a couple of larger jets- that saved me from modifying edelbrock floats or scrounging something for a Carter. The float level is adjusted on the car with a set screw and sight port. From what I understand tuning can be a chore on a blow through set up. At least I won't be fighting the carb over simple things. |

Post subject: | Turbo map |
I relied on Mike Holler's turbo article early on in my planning. http://www.allpar.com/fix/holler/slant-six-turbo.html Wayne's article edited by Chuck and Doug helped a lot too. http://www.slantsix.org/articles/turbo- ... rticle.htm I opted for an '87 SVO Turbo. This one is an IHI so I think it's actually from a T-bird turbo coupe. Apparently MX6 guys see this turbo as a nice upgrade for their cars, so there's some info on the web about them. Like this turbo map: I have no real idea what I'm doing plotting this thing, but this is what I think I have. This is at 7 lbs boost. I asked for Eric Bolander @ Erson cam for a turbo grind that would play to the inherent personality of a 225- grunt and grins in the low RPM range. My hope is that the OD trans will let me keep the RPM down where it's fun and cheap. |

Post subject: | Engine bay |
I have a small soda blaster. I've used it before but it's messy in the garage. Filling it has been a pain and I think I discovered why. I got my hands on a stainless steel laboratory funnel. It has a relief "crease" formed in the nozzle, to allow burping, I suppose. I filled the tank all the way up and blasted the engine bay. All loose rust blew off immediately and stubborn areas went pretty well too. I'm not going to remove the existing finish to bare metal. I'm just looking for a reasonably clean, well protected engine bay. |

Post subject: | Carb Hat |
My plan is to make a carb hat from this air cleaner assembly: The base is a fairly heavy stamped sheet metal piece. I should be able to find/make a sheet metal ring of sufficient strength to weld in place and weld in a BOV adapter. I'm thinking the modern look air cleaner cover against the old school valve cover and paint scheme will look cool. |

Post subject: | Turbo exhaust |
Since my turbo was originally mounted on the passenger side of a T-bird and I'm putting it on the driver side, I have 2 choices: Clock the turbine housings and install it with the exhaust side toward the front of the car or get my grubby mitts on a new exhaust flange and weld a new exhaust outlet on pointing in the opposite direction. I'm going plan B. I found a source for oval mandrel bent exhaust tubing. A pre bent 45 will be cut and welded in place at an angle that will allow me to "thread the needle" between steering parts and shift linkages. This will also be a 3" or more likely 4" oval tube- a RADICAL improvement over the stock T-bird 2-1/2". It will also exit the turbo at a 30 or so degree angle instead of 2 90 degree short radius bends. I'll worry about the under-car portion later. |

This is the stock 10" disc from my dart. In order to use the '57 Plymouth tranny and keep a 10" clutch, I have to use a 1960-'63 Dodge truck disc. The following flywheel mods are necessary: 1/4" chamfer and 5/32" counter bore are being turned on flywheel to allow clearances. Is it worth it? I think a 3 on the tree w/ electric OD is worth a little fooling around. |

Quote: Is it worth it? I think a 3 on the tree w/ electric OD is worth a little fooling around. I really dont much about that trans that's in the car now.. but I know some of the old 3 speeds that came behind the slants would not hold up to any kind of performance at all. Greg |

You may be right Greg, I know I'm working against the grain here. The tranny I'm installing was the standard used behind 1957-'59 poly head V8s. Those were 200+ HP motors. My fingers are crossed . |

MR2 intercooler is a great fit. we'll see if it works ok later. Plenty of clearance between I/C and radiator. Looks like intake air will enter under driver side headlight. If it works all plumbing will stay in one place. Chevo has no trouble w/ soldering a coolant return fitting in the radiator. Tee at water pump/heater core outlet will provide coolant. Oil return is already welded into oil pan, supply will follow firewall and supply turbo from rear. |

Engine is back from rebuild. Builder credited me 100.00 because I supplied Erson cam and head gasket, I thought it was very fair. The fitting in the oil pan is a steel gas fitting. I cut the compression end off and welded it nice and neat from the inside of the pan. This is the oil return inlet from turbo. |

I got the modified bell housing back today: The welder plugged the original threaded holes then built up enough weld to drill and tap new ones. Test fit. So far, so good. |
