Based on the references I think my 2000 Dodge Dakota 3.9L starter with Chrysler part number 56027702AC & Denso # 228000-7421 takes a 66-82761 & 66-82756 contact set. Sounds correct? I've got the cover off the solenoid & compared the contacts to some enlarged pictures on EBAY of both of the above contacts & they appear to match. Is there an insulator block also to replace? |

Put the plunger with the round copper disk in a drill press or lathe and take a file to it.............. |

When things turn brown and begin to stink... Finally had a chance to crawl under the car and pull the access plate so I could remove the broken starter pieces. Most came out, but the main part of the snout was wedged between the torque converter and the transmission housing. It was in an area that was almost impossible to reach with something to drive it back out, but two sweaty hours later I had the piece out and everything reassembled. Since I knew I couldn't get a replacement starter before the local car show next week, I decided to install ther old Mopar starter that had been slowly wearing out...thinking it would surely last a couple of weeks. Surprise. When I hit the starter the solenoid operated, but the starter wouldn't turn. Thinking the battery might be low, I put my old battery charger on the car for a couple of hours. The old charger doesn't work well, but the new charger I recently bought was stolen, along with my air compressor, when burglars hit the area a couple of weeks ago. After charging, it still wouldn't turn, so I pulled and bench tested it. It was bad, so now if I want to attend the show, I will have to drive three hours to buy a used starter that may or may not be good, or pay extra to have an aftermarket replacement shipped fast, or buy a factory replacement from the local dealership for a ridiculous price. Decisions, decisions..... |

Update: I decided to go yet another route. I talked to the guys at O'Reilly's and they recommened their own premium rebuilt starters. It was a real Denso that had been rebuilt in Mexico and had not been touched by Chinese hands. It works perfectly and has a lifetime warranty, so I'll see how it works out. I turned in the "new" Chinese starter as a core, and am drafting a letter to the folks who sold it to me. I'll let you know their response. |
