i vote for a leak test, if it was lying up for a while the rings could be stuck if so some penatrating oil in the cylinder over night might dissovel the carbon and free the rings.

I'd say do a leakdown test, but if he just got a compression gauge then he probabaly doesn't have a leakdown gauge set or a decently big air compressor ( I could, I say, I could be wrong  )

A touch strong there... we ALL have written posts that seem good at the time, yet in retrospect are not so "on the money"!

I could find a dozen or so of my own that would fit that description... if you'd like examples!

I can think of some possible causes, because my slant has a weak cylinder, but runs well enough just to keep driving.

The single most likely explanation might be stripped threads in #5 spark plug hole. How come nobody thought of this?

Other explanations not already listed would mostly be valve related. How about something stuck on a valve seat - like that air cleaner wing nut that magically disappeared. How about a valve spring issue. How about something hanging up in the valve guides.

Just thinking out loud.

Stripped threads, would still give you some compression and you would know that screwing in the compression gauge.Hole in piston or a completely stuck open exhaust valve,or badly burnt.Very hard to get Zero.Maybee his gauge wasnt screwed in.

I pulled the head yesterday. The exhaust valve on the number 5 cylinder has a hole along the edge about 1/2" long and 1/8" at the widest.

Before I pulled they head, I laid a straight edge over the top of the valves. The exhaust valve on the number 5 cylinder was 0.10" higher. Almost an 1/8".

Thanks for the help.

I am in the process of installing the head from the other slant six that I have. Its from a 78 aspen wagon. I bought it from a guy about 3 years ago for $50. The 904 transmission was included. I was told it has around 70k miles on it. This head should be good with the unleaded gas. The old head was from 1970 so maybe that contributed to the burnt valve.

I will probably swap the super six setup later. I want to get the car running first.
