I've run a glasspack on a factory manifold to a 2 1/4" single exhaust. I thought it sounded OK. It was a decent sound with the expected drone at highway speeds. I now run Clifford shorties to a true dual throug an x-pipe with Smithy's 22" (I think) mufflers. My current system is 2".

I think my current setup is actually a bit quieter when driving normally, but when I get on it, it screams. It is the best-sounding six cylinder I've ever heard in person (although it still has that drone I was trying to get rid of. If it really bothers me I'll spring for some Flowmaster 50 series)

6shot I like how your car sounds on the top end. With my straight exhaust it has a deep throaty growl all the way up and then really starts to roar past 3k. People roll there windows up when I drive by. Especially when I get on it. It is very quiet at idle though.

I'll post a video of mine later, but I ran my own 2.25" from the manifold to the driver quarter, coming out right before the rear tire. I think it sounds nice, whih is all that matters. I got rid of that funky headpipe with the 3 bends in it and did one continuous sweep from the flange to the tranny crossmember, then I put in a 24" thrush glass pack in as close as I could to the tranny crossmember, and then swept it out the side. It has a nice quiet idle, a real nice rumble during regular driving, roars in the midrange and screams at the top end

That might get you legal, but it's not good for power. Take the car to the track where you can run open exhaust. Find the right length header extension, build a pressure wave termination box and then extend the exhaust to the muffler.

First post here. I have a '65 A100 pickup that has a newer Super Six in it. I pulled it out of a junkyard (sat for several decades) last month and did enough mechanical work as necessary to get it road worthy (short trips that is). It didnt have any muffler on it at all so I threw on a Smithy's "glasspack" muffler that I had laying around. If I recall it is 2 1/4" in/out and about 2' long. It is pretty quiet at idle and only burbles a little bit at throttle. I have ridden in rigs with inline engines and glasspacks before and noticed a distinct, and annoying, drone they can produce. So far I have not heard any of this from mine. It really is quite quiet. Too much so..........

i just read up and it states that a pressure wave termination box is large, that after the collectors it creates a vacuun by being a large exhaust dump area, thus drawing the next exhaust gases into it..some builds suggest gutting a muffler..

Actually, the box just makes the exhaust system appear to the pressure waves to end at that point just as it would with an open pipe. It ends the acoustic tuning at that point so that the rest of the exhaust system doesn't affect the tuned length.

David Vizard goes into quite a bit of detail on "termination boxes" in his book "how to build a small block Chevy on a budget" or something like that.

The terminator box is basically a hollowed out muffler. A RACING Flowmaster single chamber muffler (I know everyone hates Flowmaster, but it is just an example with a big empty area inside it) placed after the header collectors will effectively tune the length of the collector. Longer collectors (18-24") tune for more mid-range torque while shorter collectors tune for high-rpm torque (5000+).

The terminator box gives the exhaust pulses somewhere to expand, which then causes a slight vacuum. The slight vacuum draws more exhaust out of the cylinders during the exhaust stroke and more importantly -- with a cam with lots of overlap -- draws more fuel/air in during the intake stroke.

got one on my d150 and also on wife's 05 scion xb....both have a bit of grumble ,not to loud...acuataly gained a bit of milage in scion

well exhaust is an issue
bought some flowtech 2.5 header collector flanges that drop down to a 2.25, installed say two 4 ft. of 2.25 alumunized tubing..real loud but better then just headers..just ordered old sckool thrush glasspacks 2.25 x 31
we see how these sounds....
