Hmmm a mercedes clutch fan huh? Did you ever end up trying one out Dan?
Yup...MUCH thinner front to back, and there are a bunch of different fan blade configurations (mine is a cast aluminum 11-blade item). Also found another prospect, too, used in many Toyota trucks and vans, with the similar clutch-embedded-in-blade configuration that is shallower than the US-type clutch-in-front-of-blade setup.

What is the application for the mercedes fan you used? I see in the thread you mentioned, that the member used a 6 blade from a 77 280 se,is that the only model that will work?

No, any of many '70s-'80s-early '90s Mercedes. All it has to have is a regular V-belt rather than a serpentine belt (serpentine-belt fans spin the other direction).

Ok sounds good. So pretty much any V belt style clutch fan from the 70's-early 90's should work? Do you think it will offer adequate cooling for an a/c car in 100+ temps? I would assume so since most mercedes have a/c.

Yup. Pick one of the 9- or 11-blade items.

I would do the clutch fan unless you had an overriding desire to upgrade the alternator and charging system wiring including the bulkhead connector or need the extra power for other reasons.

Thats what I was leaning towards. I like Teds set up,but the simplicity of a clutch fan is very appealing to me.

I don't think I even ran the valves when I did my best MPG. Just points, plugs etc. I used to average 24-25.

No mods except for the exhaust. The exhaust manifold was cracked into 3 pieces! I had the head pipes split into 2 "round" turbo mufflers, duals run out the back.

With the headers and a Holley off a 318 I got 18.7-22 @ mostly 82 mph on trips. I have ran that Duster to SWFL and back several times. Oklahoma too.

That is with the headers, ported and shaved head. Stock valves and cam. I do set the valves cold to the hot settings.

Maybe the fact that it is a 198 it likes to rev?

Post subject:  Flow Master 70

Jared,

The Flow Master 70 is too quiet....I wish I went with one of the 50 series mufflers. Even with 2.5" pipe it is quiet at legal speeds on up to 65 - 70 mph. It does become noticeable after 65 but so does the wind noise. There is no resonance like with a Flow Master 30 or 40 or a Magna Flow. Very interesting muffler. It feels very peppy with 2.5" all that way back. I tried 2" and 2.25" tail pipes. 2.5" is just as quiet and much feels punchier down low.

With the electric fans I am running a stock factory alternator. The only wiring I replaced was the engine harness. Many of the wires had melted from the heat over the years. Pulling off the factory black tape was very interesting. Three of the wires had melted and shorted together making my temp gauge read higher. Lights would flicker....but that is another story. They all are a couple of sizes bigger now and run through a plastic wire conduit.
The two little 9" fans draw much less than the single 16" fan. In the Texas heat I would run the MOPAR clutch fan and the offset blade set. That was a good combo. You just don't need that much cooling up here in Puget Sound. Like SL6 Dan always says, make sure the heat flapper is working, hot air into the snorkel, etc...the faster the SL6 warms up the better mileage it gets. The electric fans help the engine warm up much faster because they aren't blowing cold air over the engine and manifolds all the time. That is how I can get 22.5 mpg driving around town local only. On the freeway the mileage jumps up over 25 mpg. Not bad for an old stock motor in a heavy 3600 lb. square car.

Ted-

Thank you very much for all of the info,it has helped me greatly. The exa. flapper is in working order, and I have the "stove" hooked up to the air cleaner. Im going to get some tubing and run fresh air to the air cleaner too. I think I will be going with a clutch fan. :D

Post subject:  I conquered a 1945!

I built a car specifically for mpg and just got it on the road.. My carb is a 1945 and it's all I have for now. I've had a hesitation, miss, surge, whatever you want to call it at 14" vacuum occasionally and always at 18" no matter what gear. Took the wheezy lil 1945 apart a couple of times (found it has a 633 jet ?!) and couldn't fix the stumble. Somebody here posted awhile back that Champion plugs in their engine always caused problems at high speed, so I took Dan's advice and just put in some plugs NGK ZFR5N (3459). Took her for a drive a lil bit ago and it's running perfect! Can't say enough about those NGK plugs.... My average so far is 28 MPG (spitting and sputterin some) and that's mostly highway 65 mph max.... I say stick with the 1 barrel!

I run an electric fan, Ferd Tbird at low speed only and it works for me. Well, my radiator is in the trunk though, have underbelly panels, and a basic rear diffuser.. Don't know what difference these mods have made..... Front Grille/radiator area is wide open for now but I'm going to start blocking off the grill little by little and watch the temps. How far are ya willing to go for extra mpg? lol

You can kinda see the electric fan under the bumper in this pic. I didn't want it to be toooo obvious :)

Ronnie-

That is very cool. I have never seen an A body with a rear mounted fan before. 28 mpg is very good as well,I think you have an advantage over me with the duster/demon fast back design, and you are running a manual transmission with overdrive, but I dont see why my Dart couldnt get up to 25-26 mpg. Keep on slantin :D
