It is relatively easy to replace the transmission and converter, so unless you need a new one right away, you could always use the one you have while being on lookout for a suitable replacement object. Time is a very relative thing in the slanted world!
Good hunting!

Yep thats the plan. Find a good trans, buy the transgo kit, install it,then replace the stock trans.

I have a lock up 727 in my D150, with 3.25 gears outback. The combo seems to work good.

The only gripe I have is the fact that the convertor lockup is done hydraulically, so I really can't have any control over it. On my chevy (TH350C) I had a toggle switch on the dash so I could control my convertor lockup. On the dodge I can't do that so I have to deal with the convertor locking in as soon the truck shifts into third gear, which is really annoying.

Jeb, the lock-up point can be changed, follow the link below.

I directed you all to the incorrect thread (sorry raPom), when referring to bigslant6fan's thread about the difference in the lock-up mechanism for different years.

The correct one is: Disection of a 1978 S/6 lock-up 904 trans.

Thanks for that Olaf. I will be buying a L/U 904 from Wes this weekend,he says it is out of an 80 Volare so it should be the better trans. Should I still buy the shift improver kit you linked on the last page?

I had an A999(I think, it came out of a big van) I installed a cheetah shift improver and cranked the line pressure up per Doc's instructon. Behind my very healthy slant it would lock up at 45-50 mph if I wasn't "on it" I would watch it drop 300-350rpm on the tach. I would get 21mpg cruising at 70mph turning 3100rpm. The rear was an 8 3/4 3.23 SG and 24" tall tires(235/60R14)

Thanks guys I will definitely look into that. My convertor locks up at 35-40 MPH unless you have it nailed to the floor.

Can you get 2500-3000 stall converters for the LU's??

I have seen up to 3000 RPM stall on a V8. I have a 3000 stall (rated for V8 ) converter on my '68 Dart w/A500 trans, but it only stalls at 2200.

raPom: Yes! Look it up on the web, and see what it does. If you think it isn't necessary, your transmission will work good anyway
