Just asking, but why is an extended reach plug the "correct" plug?
Didjya do that "ZFR5N" search?

Yes I did. I see nothing that states why an extended reach plug is now correct. I do see that under certain conditions they will cause detonation though.

Several posts back I read original spark plug hex was 11/16". For the last 50+ years I have used a 13/16" spark plug socket on original type plugs and more recently 5/8" on the newer types.

Good catch, Bruce; I meant 13/16" rather than 11/16".

Zilla, the projected-electrode plugs were originally designed for AMC and Chrysler in the late '70s when they were trying to make engines run reliably with extremely lean and stratified charges. The extra-long electrodes put the spark point a lot closer to the center of the combustion chamber and moves it away from quench-prone chamber walls, which in turn results in a reduced chance of misfire.
They are of the same heat range as the stock slant-6 plug; they do not cause detonation where a short-electrode plug of the same heat range wouldn't cause detonation. As Ceej mentions, higher compression (or boost, for that matter) will require a colder plug.

yeah. i found that out this past weekend, this whole thing will be a learning experience but i'll tell ya, it's weirdly satisfying working on this stuff.

thanks for the good advice so far. i will toss that little rubber bullet...or make it into an ugly necklace.

the other thing is that since the engine does run i am kind of hoping to find one really bad plug of the four i haven't checked. get that guy replaced and maybe it takes the shake out my steering wheel.....

hey everybody, i was talking in another thread about my OLD antifreeze and thought it would be cool to post these photos of the original bill of sale (old boy traded in a '51 ford for this lancer) and a sears service receipt from '69.

it's cool to have these artifacts and a glimpse into this car's journey.....

from another thread:
Quote:
The difference in quality between an NGK or Denso plug and an Autolite or Champion is readily visible using just one's senses of eyesight and touch, before even installing them in an engine.
this seems to be true. i happen to have 3 out of the 4 here right now and you can tell the quality by touch....

the reason i have a few types is to see what will fit more snugly without having to replace the plug wires right now. i do not want to go with champion (i already had a box), so i picked up some densos.
you may recall i was having fitting issues:
Quote:
they are the ZFR5N (from napa, stock #3459), but i did have to wonder after the fit seemed awkward. the wire cap loosely hangs on and that wasn't a confidence booster.
based on the threads and the overall shape, the denso looks as if it will be a better match to the original autolite, reaching the plug boots better (here's the original plug next to the NGK again). i'm hoping it will seat with a better reach.

hi all-
i could have SWORN i asked this in a previous thread, but i cannot find it anywhere...and the answer is old news now anyway.
i had asked what part number i would need for wiper refills on my lancer. the answer at the time was anco N-12R, but after getting those, they were not wide enough. it seems the part had changed design and number and was 12-12 for awhile. well now, those too are discontinued!

the latest i have come up with is to go with is a full-width cut-to-length all-plastic refill.....anybody have a brand name for those? or if this is the way to go?

thanks.

Nice car, enjoy it. It is satisfying working on an old car. Glad you are here. I also have a first body style valiant (not in as good of shape though). Mine is a 62 Valiant 2 door sedan.

You might have to change to the later 13" blades.

thanks, nuttyprof, i'm late to the game...haven't worked on cars much in my life, but always enjoy new things.....well, OLD things in this case!

emsvitil, what does going to 13" entail exactly?

the one thing i haven't actually done yet is contact anco....perhaps they have a way to find what i'm looking for....discontinued or not.

If you're using refills, the added inch of blade is either on the side towards the pivot or on the outside.........

Whatever way works best.....
