If it were brownish-black gummy gunk, I'd say it's normal crankcase residue. Clear? Definitely sounds like glue, probably an IPO error ("Idiot Previous Owner").

That's what I was betting on.
Got the "new" carb. Turns out it's remanufactured, but it's technically in better condition than the other one. It does have a small hole in the body itself, just between the mounting tab and the vac line port on the driver's side. It goes through all the way into the body. We're joking that it's an artificial vacuum leak that you slowly plug to wean you off the leak you're used to, but I'd love to know what your thoughts are on what this hole actually is.

Yet another question:

I was just looking around for what I need to wrap my pcv hose over to the driver's side port (I'm assuming I'm looking for something along the lines of a U bend) and I ran across a breather with a pcv in it. I noticed the inside of my hose was oily, but I don't get any smoke out the tail.
Is this breather worth anything to me? I was thinking the extra filtering of the breather might help with oil in the line, but then again it may just go straight into the pcv and have the filter fiber around the sides to catch what goes by.
Thoughts?

SL6Dan has posted this type of option with part numbers. I used Dan's set up for several years. It does help. You can use an oil accumulator tank in line too.

I have used the Spectre version for several years with good results. Click on the redlink below my name to view pictures of the Spectre PCV, Spectre Air breather and Spectre chrome valve cover.

Will do! Thanks!

I just hooked it up with a hose looped around and it works! Yay! My buddy's back in action!

Ok, time for another question!

The "new" carb has some interesting choke linkage that I'm having trouble finding info on. Of course I don't have a picture to put up yet, but as I said before, the pcv port is on the driver's side (for identification purposes).
What I can tell you about the linkage is that the most indentifiable part is a tiny spring in the link near the dashpot.
I'll get a picture up, but any ideas on where I can find some info on tuning this thing?

Some carbs have that. Called a "spring-staged" choke. It reduces excessive choke pushrod pressure under extremely cold temperatures to reduce the likelihood the engine will flood. Start reading at the bottom right corner of this page and then continue to the next page. You don't need to worry much about it; it works the same as the non-staged setup. Also, what you are calling the "dashpot" is not a dashpot. It's the choke pulloff. Carburetor operation and repair manuals and links to training movies and carb repair/modification threads are posted here for free download.
