I have a 2" exhaust pipe with a "turbo" muffler and a 2 1/4" tailpipe. It sounds very cool, but it does have a "drone" around 60. If I would have known that, I would have opted for a more standard muffler. It does sound more like a V8 though. |

Personally, I think the quietest exhaust sounds the best. |

Normal quiet exhaust with electric dump valve just before muffler going to straight pipes. Have a switch wired so that it is loud until you flip the switch and then it becomes quiet. I found that my valiant wasn't very loud at idle when the pipe was broken off just before the muffler. So the best of both worlds in my opinion is no muffler some of the time and quiet muffler all the rest. |

I agree especially on long hauls when your tired. My set up has zero drone and is very quiet. My long daily commutes are about 4 hours typically, 120 miles minimum round trip.

Reed I agree, that slant six drone-zone in mid-2000 rpm band is just too much for more than a few minutes. With top up the drone is amplified. Straight six engines have the most irritating array of frequencies that are more muffle resistant than what a four or eight cylinder produces. I have to look into Ted’s dead quiet set up. Last year I replaced a pair of obnoxiously loud twenty year old turbo mufflers with a Walker universal OEM type unit. It knocked the racket down enough so hearing protection isn’t now required, but the car is still annoyingly loud from 2200 to 2800 rpm when under the slightest acceleration. Over 2800 rpm the engine is very quiet, to the point that while traveling to a show 122 miles away, I discovered a wind whistle while cruising at 55 mph. |
