You can pull the plastic off the shielded crimp connectors to make unshielded crimp connectors.


Radio Shack has (at least they did when I last needed them) unshielded butt crimp connectors.

Great advice all. I may have to double up the wire, should have figured that out in the first place.

After looking on the web it seems crimping alone is best, however I don't trust my skill or tools. I will secure with solder.

What about gold plated audio connectors or the nickel plated? Vanity, but it would look great!?!

For my own stuff I do as emsvitil stated, I hate those shields. I yank those off and cut heat shrink to short lengths and use that instead, I think it looks better and lends a smidgin of support/strain relief to the wire. I hate gold plated anything, except teeth

Forgot to slip on the heat shrink before soldering, or burnt it during shrinking?
I have used PlastiDip Liquid Tape for ages, and can warmly recommend it. It also ages very well, stay put for decades. I have one red and one black. The multi-purpose version is great for tool handles, the clear spray waterproofs anything.

Nearly forgot: Remember that molten solder always draws towards the hot soldering iron.

Replaced my first few connections. Of course I forgot to put on the shrink a few times. I'm one of those guys that needs a check list in hand until it becomes second nature.

Thanks for the tech and I have finished redoing most of the connections, Crimp, solder and shrink...

Everything seems to work.

I've come this far and now I'm going to clean all connections with Deoxit and apply Stabilant 22. Looking at older threads these products were recommended. I made the mistake of using dielectric grease on the contacts and I hope the Deoxit removes it?

Knock on wood and this electrical house cleaning pleases the FI and fuel management computer...

I also met a Distributor guru today and picked up a couple Echlin HEI units. Can't wait to hear it run!

I am optimistic!
