I've been through 3 rubber gaskets already, and all of them have leaked.

The gasket shows head contact all the way around, so I can't figure out how or why it's leaking. It leaks on the back edge somewhere - or at least the lower back corner is where the oil continues to drip out of and make a freaking mess all over the axle, driveshaft, transfer case...

Yes, I have an oil - air separator style breather from Mr Gasket, but it still manages to at times get the intake oiled. I wish I could afford to rebuild the bottom half to make it the way I want it, but right now I'm stuck with what I have, and it seems to have more blowby than it should.

Do you glue the rubber gasket to the valve cover first?
I have never had one leak. You can see the pictures by clicking on the red link below my name. It may be coming from between the head and the block...Sometimes folks don't use sealer on the lower edge of the block and expect the head gasket to seal it. One of Doc's more famous quotes......

You do not understand what I am talking about......
I will go out and take a picture of the air/oil separator after it quits raining. Moroso charges $150 for them but I found one at Jeg's that was about $45. It filters down to 5 microns and no oil can get into the intake.

It is kind of fun since it is clear and you can see how much oil accumulates. I thought I would try it since my engine has over 260,000 miles....It definitely helps with more power after the valves cleaned up. I really like it. It doesn't matter how much blow by you have.......this unit will catch it and keep those valves clean! :D :D :D

I didn't glue the rubber gasket, no. I've never had a rig that I used a rubber gasket there and it leaked, before. Perhaps the rocker cover is not shaped right or warped or something. I know I had to bend some of the tabs that are supposed to hold the gasket, along the top, as they hit the head and wouldn't let it rest tight to the head.

I didn't expect it to be totally oil-tight, but it leaks badly - 500 miles or less to the quart.

and "Oh, THAT oil separator" :)

I know what those are, but since it's just 8-9 inches from the breather to the intake tube (cold air intake), I will probably just let it keep doing what it's doing.

It finally quit raining so I snapped a few shots of the air-oil separator installed. Take a look by clicking on the red link below my name. I have been running it for a month now with a healthy dose of Gumout and I turned the alcohol water injection back on now that Spring has come. The starts are quicker and the idle is super smooth......no pops, farts or hiccups. I have had to drain it a couple of times over the past 30 days or so. I am running the 15-50W synthetic Mobile 1 with a quart of 0-30W added to it. This 1980 engine has a lot of miles on it, plus it sat rusting in a barn for 10 years covered in hay and cobwebs with out a carb, distributor or fuel pump. That was 3 years ago. Kind of fun resurrecting a SL6 from the dead. The intake, head or pan have never been off......
22.5 mpg for short hops in town, 25+ mpg on the freeway, 52 degrees total timing.

I like it! :D :D :D

Nice old car. Wish I had one like it. I'd want to convert to 5 speed, lower it, big brakes, upgrade the suspension with more caster, and some engine tweaks. I'd do autocross with it for fun.

My engine seems to be some production rebuild (rebuild shop), and most of them do horrible work.

When I get the time and money and place to work, I'll swap in a shortblock with forged pistons, properly bored and honed block (including torque plate), balancing and so on. On propane, it should be good for 300+K miles.

This one has too much blowby, it knocks when you start it till the oil pressure comes up.

So, it needs redone. Hope it doesn't give up before I can get that done.
