How about the distributor gear? I recall reading that pretty much all replacement /6 dist gears had the cross pin hole in the wrong place- that it would cause the gear to poorly mesh with the cam. One had to drill a new hole in the gear in order to pin it in the correct position. |

Process of elimination. If the cam gear teeth and the oil pump gear teeth're clean & shiny in the right places, then the distributer has the problem. As mentioned, many of the aftermarket distributer gears have badly aligned holes. Chrysler's drive pin hole offset was subtle enough to be missed by both manufacturers and mechanics. Most of the aftermarket gears out there today need at least one of the holes redrilled, and some of'em need both ignored and a new set poked. The first hole can be drilled normally, in a v-block on a drill press. The second can be easily drilled through the first hole and the pin hole, with the gear mounted on the shaft. |

Actually having spilled quite a few of these over my bench in the last decade (I have currently about 30 distributors apart on my bench for recurving at this time), the holes in the shafts aren't drilled uniformly (i.e. chrysler must not have believed in jigs while making a million of these guys- even the Big Block and Small Block shafts have up to an 1/8" of hole location/variation in the shaft). So far no two if these has had the same location making scribing and spotting the new hole the fun part of the task (and probably why Dorman only plugs a single hole in their gear for "spotting" purposes). I will agree that either the gear is indexed wrong, or it lacks the proper spacer washers in the correct locations and the gear is driving the shaft upward and the mesh is not where it should be in that case either.I drill mine with a hand drill as there are quite a few (especially the late points shafts- say 1969-1972) that were drilled at a slight angle and sometimes off center of the shaft at the factory (Before installing a gear I use a punch to check the index of the hole because of this as well). -D.Idiot |

Yeah, I've had to hand fit every one that I've replaced as well. The factory disparity comes as a surprise to me though, I'd just assumed ...... So, if the factory wasn't too particular about'em I don't see how the aftermarket boys had a snowball's chance. Looks like the one-hole jobs're the best of a bad situation (I have a few of those as well). |

Out of the last 50, I had two (both were early 60's -partnumber starts 244) distributors that actually lined up with the one hole provided. But yeah, it looks like as time went on they had some base wage or import crowd drilling them as fast as they could.If I remember next time i have a few moments I have a bunch of shafts laid out ready for assembly, I should string a wire through the holes and see what the variation is like... -D.Idiot |

Ceej, to answer your ?'s, the number of freezeout plugs is 5. The numbers on the block, drivers side are 2806830-7. Smaller numbers more towards the back, 2314 BH. What do you think? |
