I just completed step one to a sub 9 second slant car. I bought a power ball ticket. I'll let you know how step two works out. |

I had a TH700 behind a Hemi 6 engine in a 70 A body. They are good trans, easily strong enough for a slant. My biggest problem was using a V6 converter,it was too small for a low revving engine,If I did it again I'd run a V8 converter, but I boxed myself in with the conversion due to the way I modded the bell housing and a V8 was too large to clear the housing,we live and learn! I ended up swapping it all out for a V8 and A518 combo, but I found the GM transmissions to be a good unit, nice shifts, and everybody knows how to service/build them and much easier to fit compared to the A518...just watch the stall speeds. |

My BMW 328 has a GM tranny behind a pretty stout slant six (bmw variety). It is smooth and efficient, but does NOT feel very strong, and has sloppy shifts. Nor is it that easy to service. I am not that impressed with it. I would not want to be the pioneer on this development program. If you use one, make sure it is built for racing by someone with experience in that. Sam |

Slant Steve, one of the reasons the 200R4 may be a better choice for the SL6 than the TH700, is that the gear ratios in the 200R4s first 3 gears are very close to the original 904, plus you have the overdrive fourth, and access to a large selection of very tuneable lock-up torque converters. One of the additional reasons I seek practical info on driveability, is that besides my project SL6, I'm also building some 318s and I'm a little short on transmissions for them... Oalf |

I found the ratios fine in the th700, I have no first hand experience on the 200, but I think for a v8 I would at least run a 700. When I did my 700 conversion my biggest concern was the loads on the bellhousing, gm stuff over here are mid mounted engines with less weight on the bell, hence the 180 degree design, the mopar stuff has forward mounts , hence more weight on the bell, I assume that's why mopar run a 360 degree bell and heavy bracing. I made up a lower bellhousing that bolted to the th700 and used factory bracing, but like I said, I committed myself to a v6 converter diameter. Yes, they are very tuneable converters, we messed around with stators and turbine combos to achieve a suitable result... Just.... That's why I bit the bullet when I went v8 and used a 518, it's easier. The gm v8 lockup converters are very heavy also, so make sure you consider that when using whatever method you decide on with flex plates, adapters etc, but all in all I like the gm trans, I think they are a better thing than the 518, but even with adaptor plates be prepared for a fair bit of work, but the results may be worth it. |

In all honesty, a 200R4 should hold up well on most any unboosted Slant. IIRC one of the big problems was when they were shift kitted. It created a lot of overlap and bad things happened. |
