Thanks, Rick!!!! It's about time, wouldn't you say? LOL!

We started this debacle in 2009, and have been working feverishly on it for 4 solid years... with more false-starts than you could imagine, but it looks like we may actually be able to get it to a drag strip for some shakedown-runs, finally...

We'll let you know... probably sometime in October, if the weather cools down.

We'll start out with a mild tune; ten pounds of boost, initially, then more, if the Gods of horsepower cooperate.

Our problem is, we don't own a trailer, nor a workable tow bar.

It's 1,022 miles, one-way, and our car is not a successful, tried and tested race car like yours... too iffy, given our track record, I think you'll agree.

Maybe next year, when we have some miles under our belt... but, not this one.

But, thanks for the invite!

First, we have to get this bucket of bolts down the drag strip under its power... I'm sure you'll understand.

Bill, We run a Slant 6 race here in Oct and in May each year. We would love to have you. But get it running and do some testing over the fall and come out next spring. Clay city would be much closer too.

Actually I'm planning on taking my 66 Valiant, if I can go. Right now I am building a new 3.91 spool pumpkin for the 8 3/4. Clutches went out in the 7 1/4, so swapped out to a 4.88 SG 8 3/4. Don't have enough RPM for that. Also made a couple of changes to the nitrous system. This car should be well into the 12's, it has more cubes, more cam, more carb, and 500 lbs lighter then my Cuda, but the Cuda is quicker. I will (maybe) get one test session before hand. Since my Cuda is now in D nitrous class, I want to try and reset my old C nitrous record.

PS: You don't have any buddies you can con into hauling the car for you? :wink: :roll:

This weekend is supposed to be cool, and I think we might be able to get it back completely together if we work on it both Friday and Saturday. We just need to bolt on the turbo, hook up the cold-side plumbing, install the carb, lines and linkages (cables, actually,) change the oil and install new spark plugs. A piece of cake... LOL!

We'll see.

My daughter has a friend who is a consultant to automobile manufacturers' engineering departments, and she was good enough to introduce me to him so I could pick his brain as regards OUR bucket of bolts. This guy makes his living advising the engineers at large auto manufacturers as to the design of their turbo systems, so when he talks, I tend to listen...

I sent him pictures and specs of our motor so I could get the benefit of his very real education, as opposed to our shade-tree mechanics/home brew "technology."

Here's what he said about our system, which includes a 600cfm Holley 4bbl with blow-thru modifications, a 66mm turbo (Turbonetics) and a Turbonetics waste gate (with a home-made header.)

He wrote, " The unequal length runners are not too big a deal when you have that much boost going on. If you are running 30 psi I would definitely get a Q-trim turbine in that thing if it doesn't have one, and try to swap that compressor side to the TMF5502.

I see your points on the carb and I actually agree.
And, I don't know Snow's product line so I don't know which you are doing, but if you are dumping methanol into the airstream instead of spraying it onto the intercooler, then you are adding fuel -- a very forgiving fuel at that -- and this will handle a lot of calibration issues. The fact that you are running this as a drag car and not a putt-around car makes calibration much easier as well.

What I would get instead of an electronic boost controller is an onboard exhaust air/fuel meter. There are some good ones out there that are inexpensive, like the Dynojet and their competitors' units.

The Cain manifold might be the way to go. The runner lengths look way better suited to what you are doing, than the long-runner one. With a long runner manifold like that, you can throw more and more boost at it and the motor just doesn't make any more power. Then you shorten the runners and it just transforms the engine's performance. 1986-1993 Mustang 5.0 engine is a great example of that and there are tons of short-runner manifolds for it for that reason.

You also will want a bigger plenum between the carb and the manifold if you can. Spacers would be the easiest way. That way the instantaneous demand of each cylinder doesn't deplete the plenum so bad. The idea is you want a big reservoir of air for each cylinder to draw from. It's very cheap power. You can make the spacer out of wood or plastic, not just for cost reduction but also to isolate it from manifold heat. For your particular car (turbo drag car with an automatic) and engine and manifold, it is probably impossible to make the plenum too big so don't worry about overdoing it."

Previous to that, he had written, "Those long runners are really going to limit the hp. If you can swap it for something else it would get you some of the biggest gains you'll make in a single part. I would use a Weber style manifold and make a plenum, or at least something with shorter runners like the 2x2bbl conversion manifolds Offenhauser and Cain are or were making.

Even just a shorter-runner 4bbl manifold will still show a good gain in peak power over what you have now, like the Cain show here vs. your manifold:

Your manifold has long runners to help fill the cylinders at low rpm, to make torque. Correspondingly they will limit top end power in a big way. A) You have an air pump to fill the cylinders, B) you don't care about low end torque since it's a track car, and C) you do care about midrange and top end power. To top it off, you have an automatic so you can load the turbo against the converter (or better yet, transbrake) so it's not like you will even leave the line at low rpm. Sorry but that manifold has to go, in my opinion."

I didn't write any of that, and, I'll BET he's right... :(

Wouldn't the longer runner provide additional "plenum" space so the whole intake system would not be depleted of boost? While not a plenum it does provide volume that he is suggesting as needed.
