Be sure to get the high flow Shaw style stat in 195 degrees. These stats stay fully seated until it's time to open. Don't drill any holes in it either like a lot of folks do. Rotate the air escape up.

O.K.,another problem. I purchased both 935-301(180') & 935-302(195') Robert Shaw thermostats and tried to install them today, and neither one would fit! The hole in my head is not large enough for the thermostat? Stants fit fine, because they don't have the cylinder shape. JEGS & Summit both show these for 225 Slant 6, but not back to 1964! Is the head that different? Doc? anyone? -Thanks Dan

Can't answer the last question. But I can offer that with a Stant 180 my heater blows air so hot you must open the windows or vents. This is with a verifiable 180 degree coolant temp. I do have an aftermarket AC which has a different heater core.

Sorry if I missed this. Do you have a real gauge to monitor coolant temp?

Yes I have a mechanical temp gauge. I checked (2) different STANT 180 thermostats, and they both opened and closed. I have also checked temp with a cooking thermometer. I drove the car 60 miles at 55mph and it barely reached 180'(70' outside). The only thing I did different from stock, is that I ran the heater hoses along the body to make it easier to remove the valve cover.(making each hose about 2 foot longer than normal)

Both t-stats will work just fine after you clean up the casting. The heads aren't cast perfectly so about 2 to 3 minutes with a grinder will knock off any barnacles. It's nice to have good heat!

it is more than "barnacles" :shock: I took coarse sandpaper on a large dowel to make sure the surface was smooth, but I didn't get into any Heavy Metal Removal. I was pissed that it didn't fit and forgot to check the other head that is sitting in the garage! I'll check it tonight, to see if they fit in it.(also a 1964)

Get a real grinding bit or coarse stone in a drill or a Dremel and don't be bashful! Sanding cast iron doesn't do much......

The thermostats don't fit in either 1964 head I have. Grinding to make them fit is not an option. They don't fit.
I ordered a 195' STANT today, should be here Wednesday.

This is just m y opinion now, but my heat blows hot with 180 coolant temp. I think the problem is in the heater system somehow. My BMW heater was not hot until I burped the air from the heater system. I wonder if you have an air bubble in there.

My heater only blows warm, not hot. Wouldn't an air bubble in the cooling system make the car run hotter?
When I rebuilt the engine, I replaced everything. Now I am going back with the original(old) parts and noticing slightly better results.(I will know more after a couple of days of driving)-Old thermostat-unknown temp range.

In the bmw the bubble gets in the heater core. Engine coolant temp is right, but heater blows warm not hot. You have to fill the bmw radiator with the car sitting pointed up hill. Just a thought that points towards the heater and not the engine. Are the heater hoses getting hot?

Yes, that is the odd thing. Both heater hoses and both radiator hoses are warm. Top radiator hose seems the warmest, then the heater hoses, then the bottom radiator hose is the least warm, none would I consider Hot compared to other cars I have had.(I need one of those fancy laser temp gauges!)

My upper hose is blistering hot on the these bitter cold commutes with a 195 degree Robert Shaw soup can style stat. Heater blows very hot air! We have been in the teens out here in the foothills.

I am wondering if you are running a 160 degree stat? :?:

The thermostat that I have in the car right now is the one that came in the car when I bought it.(and the car had sat for 7 years in a field before I got it!) It is of unknown temp. range, but the car heats up alittle faster so far.(but still not Hot)
The (2) previous thermostats are (Stant 45358) 180'.
I did not mention before, I am using a Stant 10329 Lev-R-Vent radiator Cap.

Well, if the thermo opens and closes as it should, I suppose age isnt a big factor, at least it works. I would junk that 13lb lev-r-vent cap and put on a 16lb standard cap. Im not a fan of lev-r-vents, they fail sooner, and have a better chance of releasing pressure all over your engine compartment...

Im running a 195* stant super-stat in mine p/n-45359, not sure if the older slants use a different stat or not... (mines a 78). Car stays right between the 195-200 marks on my aftermarket gauge, and dead center on the factory one. Running an old-school fixed fan on it too, takes a little while to warm up on these frezzing mornings but stays perfectly warm the whole time driving, and the heater will cook you right out of the car if you leave it on...

No a/c on my car, but am using the larger radiator from the a/c equipped models...
