185 RWHP is not so tough on pump premium. Lots of builds here to do that. That is a small cam, not much above stock, for what you are trying to achieve. I would recommend something like the 234/228 @0.050" 106 LSA Oregon cam installed at 100 deg c'line, and with a mild/medium upgrade in stall speed. Headwork is the biggest factor of all, so if you don't get it with a cam/carb change, then go back to the head. Huge gains possible there. Lou |

Also, what exhaust system used, after the headers? Lou |

Lou, I know awhile back he had engine temperature problems and I asked what he was running for mufflers. I think Sam was just running super turbo type Walkers. They really don't help scavenge the exhaust or help reduce engine temps. |

Don't use the Offenhauser, spend the money for a Clifford. There is a noticeable difference between the two, with the advantage to the Clifford. When using a 2v carb, the Offenhauser is not much better then a standard SuperSix manifold. |

After the shorties, y'd into a 2.5" back to a Flowmaster Delta flow. 2.25" after the Flowmaster, all the way out the back. Used to have a glasspack setup as a side pipe, wife says she liked the glasspack, as it was more "rowdy".Lou Thanks for the Cam suggestion, I know the Comp wasn't that spectacular, seems like it's barely better than stock with terrible idle, but it was chosen as the Erson cam I had was smacking the retainers on the vavle guides under high RPM. The Comp was the quickest thing I could get at the time. We got the Offy for $100.00, so it was hard to turn down. |

Offy better down low, but will definitely make less HP. Exhaust should be OK, but might have moderate restriction for that build. If you used a flowmaster or similar Y near the trans Xmember, then that's OK. If you have a cobbled junky Y, or too far forward, that can cost you bigtime on HP (10-20) - been there... Lou |

Dan, have you considered raising that rear end gear ratio? Question: how much do you have to remove to get 9:1 compression? When you added the cam, how did that affect the feel and performance? Thanks, Craig |

Dan-O, I,ve got some pinging with my combo as well. Comp 264s cam, 9.87:1 comp, stock two barrel intake & carter carb, 1.7 & 1.44 valves and pocket ported heads and stock ignition. I'm having to retard the ignition a little and be careful with my right foot so I can stave off the pinging. I'm going to source a Erson 280/270 cam or/and get one ground locally. It's so frustrating having the wrong cam in the car. I have a whole suit of things to do (intake, ignition, carby, cam, etc.) if I coild only find the time... Bare Metal Maz |
