yep soon as I realized I had put the carb on that I got from you last year it set off all sorts of alarm bells. I was looking at the carb while it was sitting on the car thinking Hmmm, Holley, Hummm. Holley, what is wrong with this picture? TDO! (Too dang old!)

Hey guys, I have read that working on the oil pump while in the car can be done on a 67+ but what about my 63?

I have a cherry picker and was wondering if I could attach it and lift the engine and leave it mostly attached and be able to work on the oil pump to look for the leak. Is that possible?

Thanks
John

It will be tight. I would check first for loose oil pump bolts and a failed gasket on the oil filter. I have had that happen to me a few times. Also, make sure all the fittings attached to the pump are secure, i.e. the brass "T" junction for the oil pressure gauges.

Looking at the engine bay in an A body makes me really appreciate working on a slant six in a truck or van. 8)

I would if I could, but work has me swamped right now.

I bet you can snake box en wrenches in there and tighten anything that might need it.

Hah! I will keep you posted, I am going to give it a check out tomorrow or Thursday. I have to go to Eastern Wa to check on my place getting fixed up after the fires came through.

Take care.

Well I pulled the distributor and the oil filter and rechecked them and the gaskets all good. I checked my brass "T" on the oil pressure side and the fittings for pressure and oil light and they are all good.
I stated the car after putting it on stands and ramps and see some oil oozing down from the oil pump cover top it looks like but cant put my finger directly on where it is coming from so it looks like I get to pull the engine and see if I can find the leak there. I will begin pulling tomorrow I think, it will be much cooler tomorrow here, been around 90 in the Seattle area much of the past couple of months and wilting heat for me.
Wish me luck will keep ya posted!
Cheers.

Whenever I work on a slant oilpump I wish that the engineers had designed the mounting gasket to be symmetrical- it's easy for me to flip it over the wrong way (I didn't catch it once until it puked all over the floor).

I never tried doing the pump in situ on my 63- I have done it on a 61 & dang it's a tight fit. Got it done with a full height lift & post jacks,etc.- but it certainly weren't no fun.

Yep surely is a pain in the behind.

I pulled the engine today enough to get to the pump and all and could not see anything extraordinary so I pulled the entire pump and all and when I got it on the bench (a piece of plywood) I saw the dang cover seal O-ring sticking out the side of the cover. I was pretty dang sure I put it all together ok so was wondering if there is a warped possibility for the cover so when it gets pressurized it blows out the O-ring. Anyone aware of a situation like that?
Also looking to find replacements and for some dang reason did not get the parts BEFORE I started just knowing I need them.
Now gotta get it back together before dark because its in the garage stall and the cherry picker is keeping the door from closing!
Thanks for all the help and support! I know you are there Reed!
Cheers!

Congratulations! I knew it would be something like that. Good luck getting it all back together.

Yep, thanks. Now to find the parts. I mean I can find them online but CRAP! Rockauto has them for $1.43 for the pair and then $19 for shipping. Yikes!

I am trying Car parts NW in Renton to see if Pat has them, I hope I hope!

So again has anyone experienced the O-ring blowing out from a warped cover?

Keep yall posted on progress.

You can use a straightedge to check for warping. WHat parts do you need? You can get new viton O rings in bulk at places like Haror Freight or other well-stock hardware stores and autoparts tires. Worst case scenario you can use heavy duty RTV sealant (black?) and the o-ring you have. Put the o-ring in place, put a light coating of RTV sealant over the top of the O ring, bolt the cover onto the pump body and let it sit for a while.
