That is what I am afraid of. My brother (who I am building this car for) already has so many speeding tickets that his insurance rates just went up. :? I was hoping to try and control his speeding habits through gearing and engine tuning. The 904 in this car also has a wide ratio gear set so the engine should be able to smoke the tires even in stock form. Maybe I will leave it a single barrel carb and keep a small exhaust on it.

I will take pictures and document the process as I go and them make a "how to" thread about rebuilding an 8.25 axle.
So how is this coming?
I would love to have a guide to help me with my vans 8 1/4 axle.

This has been a long slow process due to lack of time, lack of funds, and stubborn parts. We have gotten to the point where the axle housing has been stripped, the axle bearings and seals have been replaced, and the replacement pinion has had the old bearings removed. If I had beter tools and more time, I could probably get a complete axle rebuild done in a day. But that's life.

I am in the process of debating with myself whether or not I should replace the original carrier bearings on the replacement carrier and ring gear. Chrysler says you don't have to replace the carrier bearings unless there is obvious wear. But these are 40 year old parts. Even if the parts don't show obvious wear, there is still a strong temptation to try and replace them. However, I don't have the $200+ tool that is required to remove the carrier bearings correctly. I think I have figured out how to remove the carrier bearings without the special tool, but I haven't tried it yet. I have been taking pictures to document the process and will try and put together a step-by-step instructional post.

In my research, I did find some VERY informative and helpful Chrysler training videos:
1969 Chrysler Master Tech Volume 69-5, Servicing the 8-1/4 inch axle

This one is a two-part video:
