No lift, and I've been under it - I view removing the transmission with the transfer case as a Herculean job. Swapping the head and installing a new cam and lifters will be a cakewalk in comparison. Fully agree that the transmission swap would solve all the issues and no engine mods would even be needed - but - that's a massive undertaking.
Yeah, I agree with your thoughts in terms of difficulty. I just know how crappy the steep 1.65 step will always be; if you are around mountains, there will be many places where that wide step will be a pain-in-the-trannie.

Third gear at 55 mph is 3500 RPM. Looks like that's the answer for steep hills at 6000+ feet along with flashers blinking . . . .

Hopefully the cars or dirt trucks (the primary industry in New Mexico is dirt and rock refining, sorting and moving) that might rear-end me will keep their foot on the gas pedal - then I can shift in to 4th.
