Actually quite amazed at how level-sensitive it was, the carter not so much,
There are off road specific carbs and parts to upgrade existing holley and Edelbrock carbs to function off road going up or down the sides of mountains...these typically change the pivot of the float in the bowl, limit the floats travel, adds a baffle or "whistle" to the fuel supply passages and bowl to prevent sloshing...(and sometimes modify or extend the pitot tubes to prevent premature spilling of gas out them...)

All that build and parts information is in the standard Holley and Carter books available over the counter...

Ultimately EFI will cure these float issues but then you have to worry about the angle of the pickup in the tank when you don't have a full tank....

A Supersix manifold and Autolite 2100 2v. The one with 1.08 on the fuel bowls. I believe this is one of the best setups available. Excellent driviablity, good performance and mileage and parts availability. I like the ones that came installed on AMC's, usually with the 304 V8.

There is usually somebody on ebay selling a conversion kit for Jeeps with the 258 and BBD.

Can you swap just the springs in the metering rod setup on these cater AFBs?
Yes in about 60 seconds and with no fuel loss/leakage. I know the Edelbrock manual is on line & it may even be on our site. Start your search!

I like that setup. How did you get the linkage to work? Those carbs seem to take an incredibly hefty pull to get them to open. That is the setup I have and wanted to install on the truck - but am having a hell of a time working up a non-bending linkage. Got the langdon linkage and even bought and fabricated two more supports & bearings for the rod to keep it from flexing, but it still bends and the clamp-on pivot arms still slide over the shaft. Yes, I have the longer carb attachment bolts needed to properly attach the linkage brackets to the bolts, just haven't taken it apart far enough to install them yet - still working on linkage flex and arm rotation.
Just a few suggestions: The angle of the links to the carb pivots is such that they are almost pulling straight through the throttle shaft as you move off of idle. That is going to make it quite hard and give you flexing and anchoring problems. Ideally, the axis of the links to the throttle pivots at idle should be near to a 45 degree angle to a line drawn between the throttle shaft to the link pivots.

If you could angle those links downward towards the head mounting surface by make the pivots lower, that would help but it would be limited by the manifold runners. Perhaps turning the carbs around would make it easier to get a better angle.
