Thanks Reed.
Ive replaced the regulator and battery and done the discreet grounds and cleaned all the ground connections and still having issues. I plan on replacing the alt to battery with a heavier gauge wire to see if this helps.
This leaves the alternator as the biggest thing.
Cheers

Added the 10ga wire from stock alternator directly to the battery and no change in symptoms.

Post subject:  wise variation in voltage output from alternator

My car is also having this problem since I've installed the HEI. It was fine beforehand. Then after a couple hours running my alternator fried a diode. Replaced alternator with a rebuild, it ran fine for a few hours( producing 13.28-14.4 amps to the battery at almost any rpm, with or without load), but then started fluctuating the output from the alternator, between 13.2 -15.5 volts, fluctuations getting worse under heavier load. Headlights and flashers are pulsing at the same frequency and the heater blower is also increasing and decreasing speed as the voltages rises and falls.
Any way this is due to the removal of the ballast resistor?..they are all inline with the voltage regulator and field of the alternator.
I have used the standard BS HEI and coil, accel wires and a separate feed from a fuse/battery. grounds are all run back to the negative post.
HEI works wonderfully, great and easy starting, cold or hot, and she barely cranks before firing.

any suggestions?

isolated the relay with direct battery feed, wired brown wire from ignition straight to coil(+)...still pulsing, going from 13.6 to 15.5 volts measured at the battery terminals. But now, when I turn on lights, hi-beams, defroster, and heater, alternator stabilises at 13.9 volts.
any ideas?

two faulty voltage regulators..third one and she charges like a charm..13.46v at idle.

thanks
