Only way to tell is to use a vacuum gauge on the port while the engine is running at idle. Full vacuum = lean burn carb. No vacuum = distributor carb. If you know what to look for, you can check if the passage for the vacuum nipple is above or below the throttle blades. |

Thanks for the advice guys. I just ordered everything for the HEI conversion this morning. Maybe I need still need a carb? I looked at some diagrams of the 1945, to make sure I had the vacuum advance port. The port is there, looks identical to what I saw in the diagram, but it is connected to a line running to the EGR stuff that has been left over on the top of the engine, towards the back. Could I do something like, hold a small piece of paper to the port during idle or part of a latex glove, to see if the vacuum concaves the material? |

Vacuum gauges are cheap and an excellent tool. But if you can't get one of those, use a latex glove rather than a piece of paper. |

If you place a finger over manifold vacuum tap at idle one can feel the suction, where ported vacuum tap at idle won't have any suction. No better excuse for a very useful new tool than now, go get a vacuum gage, and an additional length of vacuum hose long enough to pass from carburetor to top of dash board that can be used for on the road testing. Thanks again! I never thought about Harbor Freight having this.. Much appreciated. There's one fairly close. Hopefully I'll post an update next week or so and let you know how it panned out. Again, thanks for taking the time to share your wisdom everyone. |
