Machine shop called and ya they narrowed it down to oil pump, gasket, or the pickup tube. I'm sure cutting this close on the move!

So final prognosis on the engine came in today. The aftermarket oil pump apparently now has a screen built into it. This got some crud (probably just assembly lube that was thicker than oil) built up in it and the oil pump sucked the screen into the impeller pulverizing the works. Now I wish I had him put the engine together in the first place... ended up costing another $1500!

The oil pickup has a screen, the pump should not. Can you get pictures?

I'm picking up the car friday so I'll see if he still has the pump to show me.

Anytime I have work done that costs that much , I need to see all the parts he replaced. It helps keep everyone honest.

Yeah this sounds a bit fishy. Where could you even put a screen in the pump? And... why, if the pickup has a screen?

Get the source and brand on the oil pump from the machine shop so it can be investigated. "Sounds fishy" is the right term for this.....

This is a bit dated, but here's an update. Turns out I had the pickup tube in the wrong position so it was sucking in air by creating a vortex in the oil. Their words not mine... Also the car came back with a cracked harmonic balancer, crossthreaded adapter for my oil pressure gauge into the new oil pump, and now the rear main is leaking like crazy! But at least now she's got good oil pressure. I also had to replace the brake line running along the firewall because it had been smashed shut. And the real kicker is the transmission wasn't even tightly bolted to the engine! Last time I let someone else work on my car.

Ouch. This is why I am loathe to let anyone else wrench on my cars.
