'66 FSM says Hold a steel rule against flat surface inside the case and measure from edge of rule to edge of oil screen. Measurement should be 1-1/8 inches with screen properly positioned. Screen must be an interference fit with bottom of oil pan. '72 FSM says Hold a steel rule against flat surface inside the case and measure from edge of rule to edge of oil screen. Measurement should be 1-1/8 inches with screen properly positioned. Screen must be an interference with bottom of oil pan (1/16 to 1/8 inch interference desirable). |

Roger the above. My '62 FSM has the initial 2 sentences you cite in the section on pan installation, but not the last one calling for an interference fit. The section ends with the words 'properly positioned' and the 3rd sentence is not there in any place in the /6 Engine section, nor is there any other mention of interference fit of the pickup to the pan. As a practical matter, if it is close, it would seem good.... as in all engines..... unless the pan is being used to hold the tube in place or keep it from breaking off, or there is some other specific reason for an interference which I am not able to imagine. I'll venture to guess that the later FSM's tolerance is so people don't overdo it. To DonPal.... yeah, having a gasket leak there would sure do it! |

Awesome video.. thank you!!! So the interference fit is for preventing rattling.... thank you for finding this info and providing an explanation. (For me, I'll still not worry too awfully much about it....... ) I'll be watching this multiple times as my engine is a '62.....I think I have spotted one thing in it that I never have gotten answered: the shape of the heat riser shaft anti-rattle spring.....looks like a flat one. |
