...you must have some luck, Reed....

The guy truly didn't know what he had so the listing was really vague. He had run it for three weeks and nobody had called him. I just happened to se the picture when I opened the "auto parts" section of the website. It showed four beautiful condition dog dish hubcaps with a description that read something like, "four hubcaps, good condition, no idea what they are for or how old they are. $5." I bought them the next day.

They aren't cop dog dish hubcaps, but good enough for me!

We should have a "deal of the month" post...you'd win that one hands down, those things are in perfect shape...

brian

P.S. due to my impatience, I would hardly ever be on the deal of the month page...sometimes though...like when I bought a '68 dart hood for $20 - no dents!

I am contemplating selling them. These sets go for $100-$150 on eBay. I like the other center caps better and need to make some money to pay for a potential vehicle purchase. I will think about it.

I knew it was a good deal so I jumped on it.

Post subject:  fitment answered

Reed,

So the centers fit fine in the cop car wheels.

Here is a pic from the top, I put a beauty ring on there (the rim is not painted).

http://s785.photobucket.com/user/67dart ... g.jpg.html

The centers don't sit all the way down into the bowl of the rim, they are about an 1/8" shy of touching:

http://s785.photobucket.com/user/67dart ... sort=3&o=1

But, they easily fit and if you don't like that gap, there is plenty of material and room (like 1/4") to shorten the support posts on the centers to remove that gap:

http://s785.photobucket.com/user/67dart ... sort=3&o=0

You could easily take 1/8" off the posts, I may do that.

I got the bronze colored centers; I thought they were charcoal...anyone know if the bronze is one of the factory colors or not?

I personally don't like the rally wheels; and I prefer mags over the cop car wheels, but these are all I have at the moment and the rings and centers dress them up nicely.

I just have to figure out what color to paint the rims. I'd like to match the center's bronze or whatever that color is; anybody have a paint ID for that color?

Thanks for checking this out! I don't like the Rallye rims much either. Slotted mags are my favorite, and the chromed slotted "Street Van"/"Little Red Express" rims are second. Cop rims are a close third, and then I like keystones, magnum 500s, and hurricanes equally, depending on the vehicle. I am actually selling a set of LBP 15x8.5 hurricane rims right now:

CLICK!

I am looking at a couple trucks right now and both of them have the factory chromed steel LRE slotted rims. If I get either one of those trucks I just won't need the extra hurricanes since I have the cop rims too.

I think I actually like the Street Van centers I posted a pic up earlier on the cop rims. Tall chromed acorn lugs with those centers and some trum ring would look cool.

Post subject:  rallye's

The reason I don't care for rallye's is the silver paint doesn't quite match the beauty ring, center or lug color, so it clashes. I got the darker centers because they accentuate the chrome ring, lugs, etc. I think I'll paint the cop rims the same color as the center cap, charcoal would look nice. I think darker colors or the color of the car isn't quite right either, something between the argent silver and dark colors is about right for me. The zinc phosphate is funny, it's not quite charcoal and not quite bronze, somewhere in between. It's fine if I can get the match to the center color; otherwise I'll have to paint these centers charcoal to match the rim. Regardless, they'll be a huge upgrade over my 14" steelies with hubcaps.

Anyway, if anyone likes the final look and is interested, I'll eventually be swapping these out for slotted mags.

Post subject:  template for drilling center holes

OK, so I found a way to find the right spots for drilling the holes to mount the centers.

If you put a small o-ring on each post of the centers, like this:

http://s785.photobucket.com/user/67dart ... 6.jpg.html

Then they fit snugly into the stud holes of the wheel, like this:

http://s785.photobucket.com/user/67dart ... z.jpg.html

Then the holes for the studs in the center cap are now aligned where the center cap posts will go, once drilled. You can see in that last picture I drilled a pilot hole. How do I know I got it centered in the hole?

I had to find something that fit snugly in the centers stud hole, which turned out to be an M16 nut with two turns of masking tape around it:

http://s785.photobucket.com/user/67dart ... s.jpg.html

As you can see, inside the nut I put a nylon bushing, also shimmed with masking tape so it fits snugly in the nut hole. You must make sure you're masking tape is applied evenly, no wrinkles, and nice and tight. Now I have a small hole for true center. It so happens, I have a center punch that fits into the nylon bushing snugly.

http://s785.photobucket.com/user/67dart ... b.jpg.html

Just put the assembly into each hole of the center cap and mark your drill spot. Below you can see I drilled all the pilot holes with a very small bit:

http://s785.photobucket.com/user/67dart ... 6.jpg.html

Then I just drilled out bigger to suit my needs. In the next picture these holes are big enough for the screws that hold the center cap in:

http://s785.photobucket.com/user/67dart ... a.jpg.html

But, if you use this size hole, the posts on the center cap are too tall, the center cap won't nest into the bowl of the wheel, there is that gap I showed in the previous post. So, rather than cut the posts on the center and use shorter screws, I just drilled my holes in the rim to accommodate the diameter of the post. The post comes flush with the rear surface of the rim, so I'll use a washer on the back (bigger than the end of the post/hole it's in) to hold the center in place with the screw. The washer will push against the back of the rim, and the screw heads are still below the mounting surface that abutts the brake drum or rotor when mounted.

I know the holes where centered, because the center dropped right in, and the holes in the center are centered with the stud holes as they should be.

Post subject:  more work...

I got the rims sandblasted and I painted them charcoal metallic (rustoleum wheel paint). These pics don't really show it, in the sunlight it is a wonderful color with metal flake.

Anyway, I painted the centers to match, because I don't like the bronze look of the centers.

I think it looks good because it makes the chrome stand out more than the argent silver, more contrast but not black.

http://s785.photobucket.com/user/67dart ... sort=3&o=2

I shot a couple coats of clear over the charcoal metallic, fyi.

Looks good! I like it!

I found another possible alternative for center treatment on cop rims. The chromed slotted steel wheels used on Ramchargers, trucks, and vans in the late 70s had a factory center cone that pushed through the center hole from the back. The chromed steel wheels have a beveled edge around this hole on the backside of the rim. I have to check if the cop rims have this bevel. if the cop rims do, then the chromed plastic cone for the chromed steel rims will work a cop rim. I found a place that sells reproductions of the chromed center cap for $20 each. I will check my cop rims for the bevel sometime this week. 8)

I've been looking at GM centers, 5 x 4.5" they seem to have a lot of chrome centers that will fit, at least by eye they look very similar. Some of them must work.
