On the main Bearing shells or on the Oil holes that cross through the crank?Greg |

The slant cranks that I've had to scrap due to cracks, cracked at the oil passages. My opinion on this is: a groove in the journal may invite a failure or crack local to the modification. CJ |

Your right Ceej! Back in the 60's, grooving the crank was though to be high tech for the time, but even back then, it was found that it did promote crank failure and is now a taboo practice. Cranks were then cross drilled and this has become the industry standard for many OEM performance brands that offered high performance engine packages as well as by all aftermarket crank companies. On an engine with only 4 mains, you need all the surface area you can get for journal support. |
