The answer was they made a different puck for the solids.

They make 1 puck that will fit in different bodies. That way they have shells for different motors and only 1 puck to stock.
This is not really anything I need to know for my own project but it would be interesting to know for sure which answer is correct.

In order to make the cheapest lifters possible comp makes shells for lifters in varying diameters for different makes....then makes the interiors all the same....with 2 sizes of pucks...1 for solids and 1 for hydraulics.

Dennis' answer is the same as mine

The original question was:

I have a dumb question about some low hour aftermarket lifters I have.
Here's a pic. Aftermarket lifter on the left, stock dumbell lifter on the right.

Why does the aftermarket lifter have a snap ring that looks like it could be disassembled? It's supposed to be a solid lifter. There is no oil hole on the lifter body for pressurized oil to get into it. I just don't understand why it's made this way.[/img]

Prior to the disassembly of the lifter, all anyone knew was that it looks for all the world like a hydraulic lifter for a slant six. Clearly a snap ring holding a plug in place and clearly the hole in the top of the lifter usually seen in slant six hydraulic lifters and not mechanical solid lifters.

Then you disassembled it and discovered that it was actually a solid lifter that was machined to be almost a hydraulic lifter.

I and others received some good information today. Thank you everyone for contributing.

I appreciate your response about learning the true story. We learned something we did not previously know.

We know more about these lifters than when the thread began. When we see these lifters again, we will all have a better understanding of them.

Thanks to all who post the questions, suggestions, and answers on this board. Have a safe and healthy Holiday season!

Neil
