Rick, aren't you running a howards cam that is relatively high lift short duration design?
Yes that is what is in my car now.

I would bet it has a lot to do with the poor flow characteristics of the Slant head.
That is the part I do not understand. I would think a faster ramp would help a poorer flowing head. I understand that you reach a point where higher lift becomes meaningless.
Thanks for the insights,

Rick

It may also have to do with the long stroke of the motor combined with the poor head.

I am fairly sure (I have never seen it) Mike's Stocker cam has very aggressive ramps, but low lift. It is not something any sane person would ever use in a street motor though.

It would make sense that it would be advantageous to open the valves to their optium lift point as quickly as possible, hold them there for as long as desired for the given rpm range, then slam them shut. In theory anyway.

That is a basic Stocker cam, especially since they loosened up the duration specs.

I had a couple Buick Stocker cams back in the '80s. Back then they had to have stock lift and duration. The lobes looked like an egg with the small end squared off.

Yup I had one for sbc, .390/410 lift and like 255/265@50.hyd.

If it hasn't got at least .550" lift, it belongs in a lawnmower.
Damn,I got a lawnmower cam,,,only .544 lift.

Don't forget to divide the gross lift at the cam by the rear axle ratio to get the net effective seriously gross lift (also called the grody to the max lift). So with your 0.544" gross lift, let's say you have a 2.93 rear axle, so 0.544 × 2.93 = grody to the max lift of 1.59392, well out of lawnmower territory.

I run 4.30 or 4.56 gears.
