Try to take fuel line off at the carb. Start engine.with the line.in a bottle see if there is lots of fuel flow also.look for dirt or crap lodged in the needle. And.seat.fitting on the car. Rght where the fuel line goes.on.

Hi guys, good news.

As suggested I threw an air compressor on the pickup line of the fuel pump (also on the other piece of line that runs up to the carby after detaching it from the pump) and blew some air through.

Took it out for a spin on the same stretches it kept dying on, fed it WOT a few times along with driving at various levels of throttle and it was all good.

Have a feeling you guys were on the money with either the gauze sock in the tank being full of junk or degrading and blocking the pipe. I'll get the car up on a hoist to drain and drop the tank sometime soon, for a cleanout and to replace the gauze. I'll also inspect and clean as you suggest, Hikedodge, along with a go-over in carbyland to see what else needs a cleanup.

If anything pops up I'll come back to this thread, but for now it seems like case closed!

If anyone's interested all I threw on was a 12v compressor off the battery, nothing crazy. Also did it with the fuel cap off.

These older cars can have some crazy crap in the tank, depends on how the car was cared for, or not, over the decades.

Glad to hear you're getting it figured out.

Post subject:  Fuel Filter

Greetings,
when I bought my '64, there is a can filter in the line just outside the tank. I haven't yet removed the non-op sender yet, but I bet the filter was installed when the sock was removed.

Seems like a good spot to pre filter the gas headed toward the front.
