| Post subject: | It lives ... again... |
OK, it's up and running! Did pressure tests as per the extremeautomatics.com instructions and all is well. Did a 3-5 mi test/break in drive last night and it shifts fine, zero leaks, and minimal vibrations. Making a howl in R, 2, and 1, and I called the shop to ask. They said it is just the pump breaking in and it should quiet down. The noise does seem to be lessening with run time. My initial not-heavy-footed stall test is not too encouraging (maybe only 2500?) so the converter may have to go back for an adjustment, but I'll drive it for a while and get some better data... I can also notice a bit easier steering due to the new 'glass front bumper (VFN - 30 lbs off) and new trans (45-50 lbs off). I hope to pull another 100 lbs or so off this thing before Mason-Dixon. Lots more pics to post - soon. Lou |

Does Flash / Stall Change at all with Converter break in? Nice Work! Greg |

Sounds great Lou! Converter itself will probably not "break-in" much, but a heavier foot may stall it a little higher. |

I have used perhaps 10 different converters with higher than stock stall. None of them ever changed their stall with use, to the limit of my observation (+/-100 RPM). I will see what the heavier foot does this weekend... Lou |

I uploaded another 40 pics of the trans install (69 total pics): https://www.flickr.com/photos/16910097@ ... 6422145422 I have about 100 miles on this now. It shifts well, and quite hard when you stand on it. Nice chirp going into 2nd under moderate/high throttle, but pretty mild shifts at light throttle and low shift RPM. The vibrations at crank speed and driveshaft speed are greatly reduced - not completely gone, but close enough for me. I need to adjust driveshaft/pinion angle slightly still. You can feel the weight difference in the car - nice. So, mostly things are OK, but there are a few issues. 1) The static stall and flash stall are the same, and about 2300 RPM. This is a bit worse than the converter I pulled out (w/A500 Mopar automatic). Rats. I am sending the converter back to be adjusted for 2800-3000 stall, which is what I requested. I will be "put out" if they cannot hit my stall, as this was the main reason for this swap (lack of variety of converters for Mopar LU trannys). 2) The lockup is not working properly, as it comes out of LU under pretty light throttle. I called and EA said it should be a hard lock when the toggle switch is on. This is either a switch/current problem, or there is leakage around the trans input shaft where it meets the torque converter. Ugh. There is a wee o-ring on the inner trans input shaft that might have gotten damaged on install? 3) There is a whine from the trans that increases with engine RPM - a bit annoying. EA says this should lessen with break-in/run time, but they say some of it is vane noise with the ATF and might remain. I am not so happy about this, but it is only barely noticeable on the hwy at least. Let's just say I will not be excited until I get at least 1 and 2 worked out - fingers crossed. Slant on, Lou |

These trannys drop out of lockup very easily. ....but I have not had a hard wired lockup....and only have experience with EFI trans' I adjust the TV cable to the maximum to keep shift points high and decrease "hunting" Their whine explanation sounds like BS to me. I have only had very high mileage trans' whine....or ones that were about to cough the OD sun gear. Hopefully they did the sun gear upgrade. |

Yesterday I spoke with Greg at R&R Torque Converters in Asheville, NC about re-stalling my converter. They subcontract with Extremeautomatics to make their converters. Turns out he got the complete wrong info from Extremeautomatics and didn't even know this was for a turbo. He seemed very knowledgeable on the phone and asked all the right questions. Said he will turn it around today (Tues) and maybe I can have it in the car for the M-D race. Shooting for 3000 stall on low boost and efficient up top at high boost. 2200-2300 is just not cutting it down low, but the car is wicked fast above 3000 RPM. The kickdown circuit/mechanism is working really nicely now and the shifts are firm at low throttle and "spin the tires going into 2nd" at WOT (13psi). I expect with drag radials this will just be a chirp. Lou |

Thanks, Ron. I am hoping to be in the high 12s this year sometime. At M-D, I hope and expect to run mid 13s if I don't get the high stall in there, and maybe low 13s (or 12s??) if I get the new converter in. I upped boost slightly to 13 psi compared to last year and you can feel it, plus I have taken 200 lbs out of the car. I tried 14-15 psi, which I also can feel, so may do a couple of passes up there too. I had originally planned to do a stroker short block for this car, but have been held up by other projects (like the 200-4R) and high load at work. It will be fun if I can run 12s street driven with a 175k mile motor I drive all over the country. My estimates are that the stroker and ~15 psi will get me in the 11s, but that will be at least a year. Hope I am not jinxing myself here... Lou |

Coming from you, Dennis, I bet that means "hope all the parts stay inside the engine and trans..." Lou |

Just for fun.....I stalled the 4L60 (non "E") in the DeSoto.....2000 rpm It didnt matter how I did it.....brake or flash I got exactly 2000 each time Stock convertor ,,,,,180hp I bet when you get the right convertor that thing will really fly. I hope they did the sun gear upgrade......If it turns out they did not be gentle with shifts from 3rd to 4th. When the sungear grenades you get left with a TH350 and 3 gears. I have driven hundreds of miles home with no OD with no ill effect. I run with the TV cable adjusted so it shifts right around 5000 at half throttle. It makes low speed 1=2 shift rather firm. Good luck this weekend! |
