It's looking like I will use the original starter and maybe make a heat shield or wrap the starter. I also will need to make some angle shims to weld to the rear header flanges to tip the header out away from the starter. Will need to cut the end off the front header and turn it down before the starter. When I get that done what is the opinion on duals or single exhaust? Also have any of you ever made custom headers? Would that be easier? |

I have a buddy who does custom headers. He also owns an exhaust shop. Patience and a good eye are the most important things you need. He usually starts with flanges and a bunch of U bends and such and then runs as much straight tube as possible. You have the advantage of having a set of headers already that kind of fit. |

Definitely... He will need a 1975-1987 Np235/435 bellhousing, flywheel, linkage (the linkage or slave cylinder on his era bell is on the passenger side typically...) To use headers he will need something that will go 3 to 1 in short order like the dutra dual duals and route the pipe to avoid the starter... FYI, if you want to lose some weight and get a higher rpm starter Robb-McNabb makes a Hitachi Starter setup that will work with your current bell and flywheel, it's lighter, and a bit shorter than the stock starter you have, but not as short as the denso mini...the bad news is it cost a few hundred $$$...but the one to get is the combo involving the "early hemi" so it has the correct 9 tooth starter gear... |

These are the pictures of the starter I'm dealing with. I'll post pictures when I get it all installed and corrected. Thanks for everyone's help. |

What would give me the best sound, Dual or single exhaust? Should I run both headers into a "Y" pipe? |

I'd say get Dutra Duals instead of headers. Best torque and driveability by running a 2" pipe off each Dual, "Y" together into a single 2-1/4" pipe, from there to a well-chosen muffler and proper tailpipe. If you don't care about best torque and driveability and just want to have fun making noise, then 2" duals all the way back. |
