Do you think if I'm doing head milling and all those other upgrades if I should just rebuild the head and put in oversized valves as well or is that a waste with a a 350 cfm 2 bbl

You can get quite a bit more flow through the head just by opening up the bowl under the valves. Even with stock valves. But if you can afford it, I would probably go ahead and have oversized valves installed and then you are set for future upgrades.

Now I know your not a psychic and this is an annoying question with a lot of variables but if you had to guess
What hp and 1/4 time (estimate) do you think I could get with 2bbl intake 350 cfm carb 819 cam dutra duals 9.2:1 cr w/ a ported head and 1.70 1.44 valves? And would this be decent on the street

I am also planning on adding a 3.23 sure grip

That should get you pretty well into the 16s. I got 17-flat with a stock 1967 cam, Holley 390, Offy intake and 2.25" exhaust off the manifold. Head had big valves and was cut .080" which got me all the way to 8.5:1. :)

That was with a 3-speed manual and 3.21 geared 8.25" axle.

That sounds pretty good. My carb is 40cfm smaller but the cam would be bigger and I'd have higher compression and with the dual 2" exhaust I'm planning on would have less flow. If that gets me in the 16s with a 3.23 rear end gear what would it take to get in the high 15s

2 barrel carbs are rated at a different pressure drop than 4 barrel carbs... your 2 barrel is essentially the front half of the Carb Josh ran.

FYI...

3.91 gears and a higher stall convertor will help a lot towards a 15 second time slip. But without an overdrive gear it won't be fun on the street.

Yeah I don't really know if I should do that just because it would be my daily driver. But I was thinking of upgrading the torque converter down the road anyway. What stall do you think I should get with the 819 cam

I am running the stock convertor in my truck and it works fine.

So there is probably minimal gain from a higher stall converter.
Thanks everyone for the tips. Now I have a detailed plan for my car!

You will definitely see a gain from a higher stall converter. I like 2800 stall for a street/strip car. If you do that, you can run higher cam and compression and make more power. The whole package working together is what makes the car fast, efficient, and reliable.

Perhaps you should plan out your budget and timing of different modifications. How much can you spend when and what are your near and further term goals for the car.

The first place I suggest spending money and time is the cylinder head - bigger valves, milling for higher CR, and porting.

Best,

Lou

Thanks for the help Lou.
So far I have a 2 bbl carb and electronic ignition that's it. It was done bc I needed a new carb anyway so what the heck.

Now in the near future I am planning on
Super 6 intake (already purchased just needs installed)
Dutra duals w/ 2" exhaust. (Installed with intake)

That is my short term plan. The issue is I am a high school student and I need this car as my daily driver. I do not have the time to completely rebuild my motor but I don't want to take any short cuts. But I have a long term plan as well. Next summer I plan on a rebuild when I have the time.

New rings and bearings
Oregon 819 cam
Rebuild head (new seats/valve job)
Milled head (9-9.5:1 cr)
Ported head
8 1/4 or 8/3/4 reader end (sure grip. 3.23 or 3.55 gears)
Possibly a torque converter (unknown stall)

I have considered oversized valves. I would like to but I'm not sure if it would be a great hp per dollar ratio with a 2bbl carb.

Casey, I would keep my eyes open for a cheap Slant 6 engine in the area. Then you could begin work on it as time an money allows, and still be using your car as a daily driver. They are out there for cheap if your patient. I'll keep my eyes open for you in case I see something.

That's a good idea. My only concern is that the engine will need more money then my current one. There is only 56,000 miles on it and it runs great. The odds of needing new piston or having a cracked block is low. If I get another one the odds go up and I was planning on using the stock bottom end. But ideally yes that is a very smart move. About how much would one cost. (Doesn't have to run just ready to rebuild)
