Side question: is there any benefit to running a bypass hose between the heater hookups, as opposed to capping them both off?
I don't like using those rubber hose caps, as I have seen them break many times. The pipe nipple in the head can be replaced with a screw in cap but the one in the water pump is more difficult to cap off. Much simpler to just run a loop of hose. The 'J" hose just looks a little neater. No real benefit.

It is hard to find any good rubber caps out there. I use the hole in the head to run my electric fan switch. I cap the water pump off with a piece of heater hose and a large bolt with silicone!

You can ream the one on the water pump and tap it for a pipe plug. It will take a 1/4" IIRC.

I run my heater since I'm not a racer, but I'd likely do the tap and plug version if i weren't using it.

Thanks on the valve cover info, Matt, I thought there was some new vendor or this was a south african or some Turkish version from way back in the day...

Matt, do share on the belt drive, etc....

Pulley setup is my "cheap underdrive" setup

and I just made up the simple alternator mount.

For the race car on my next water pump I will probably just weld it shut. I was going to tap it but was afraid it was to thin and may crack. But since you did it I may try that also.

The one I had was done by Barry Harrison. I bought the pump used from him at a Clay City race and I used it for years. :D

Yeah, the rubber hose caps I used started to crack after a couple years. I just replaced them with some blue silicone caps I saw on Amazon, factory direct from Shengzhou City! We'll see how they hold up.

Post subject:  thread hijacking..

I learn more stuff from thread hijacking sometimes than the regular thread topic...no worries.

When I get back home I'll send a pic of my new valve cover that I splurged on...

I tend to use pipe plugs because the hose allows more coolant to by-pass around the thermostat... and that can slow down the warm-up cycle.

I have also successfully taped-out the water pump's "bib", you just have to size the hole for the tap & work it in & out carefully, so you do not split the bib.

Oh... great work on getting your rebuilt engine ready to install.

...I'm biting at the bit, I'm away on vacation and longing to install that engine and fire her up....
